Today can the first day of your new association with BLENKO GLASS in Milton, W. Va. (304 743 9081).
Blenko is one of the oldest glass manufacturer in the United States, this very old factory is located mid way between Huntington and Charleston. It is easy to locate off I-64 ( very well marked only 2 miles from interstate).
The Visitors Center Area is composed of a large lake with walking paths, duck, geese, frogs are roaming about....the first floor is a 'sale' room where bargains up to 75% off retail can be found. The 2nd floor contains a museum** and a viewing area / room for self guided tours of glass blowing.
At BLENKO we cherish our friends old and new. Come by, shop, visit, bring lunch, sit at one of the benches, enjoy the beautiful landscape ' the new BLENKO bricks,' observe the flowers, trees, animals and relax.

West Virginia Birthday - BLENKO GLASS
June 20th is West Virginia's Birthday. If you are a state government employee you may have a 'holiday' - if you are a shopper - there are sales every where in honor of West Virginina's Birthday.
The most exciting thing about WEST VIRIGNIA's BIRTHDAY is each year BLENKO GLASS Company in Milton (304 743 9081) designs and produces a limited number, signed glass item in honor of the state's birthday.
The Birthday Piece is sold at the Blenko Glass Visitors Center in Milton. I would suggest if you plan to purchase - you arrive early, these are usually sold out within 30 minutes of the store opening - the line is long - people sometimes arrive as early as 2 am.

THE SPLURGE
The Splurge! Do you know your partner or best friend well enough to know what they would splurge on? If not find out this week!
For everyone its different! This weekend - at The Glass Arts Society Conference we were discussing Splurge spending - for some its a weekend away, a new blow pipe, an expensive piece of art, a great dress, a coveted piece of jewelry, roses, a new bichon, when it was my turn I didn't even have to think for 2 seconds - the answer was a RED LEATHER LONGCHAMP (weekender)**Not that I need this bag - I have perfectly good Nantucket Navy matching luggage. But the discussion was SPLURGE.
The twelve people at our table all friends yet no one correctly guessed the 'splurge' item.
I have a long list of vintage BLENKO that I covet and a dozen people who know I want these items - yet - the SPLURGE wasn't the BLENKO.
Perhaps this is a good week to dig into the pockets of your mind or where ever we keep those little hidden thoughts and bring them out - allowing others to know what your hopes and wishes are. Allowing others to become aware of our goals, (not just for splurge spending) but our goals in life - makes for an easier journey. Sharing hopes, dreams, ideas, problems, cares, concerns, isn't a new concept.
This week I got an email from one my friends in Texas who comments that another friend was not feeling good and might like getting some cards or emails from friends. This concept of sharing - sharing our HOPES . . . .sharing our Collections . . . .sharing our Desires . . .
it is what friends do. Tim and Chris - both this week reminded me that friends look out for friends.

Andrew Erdos - Remember this Name!
At the auction - I saw several pieces of work ( photos will be coming later) that were outstanding. My favorite for reasons I can't explain was entitled ROLLING DECANTER & GLASSES it was by Pmina Traylor an artist and educator from California College of Art. It was one of the least expensive items ($627 starting bid) but it spoke to me. Simple - unique - when I post the photo I hope you will also be moved by the design.
Another person whose work
was very impressive as was he is ANDREW ERDOS he is the STUDENT Representative to the Glass Arts Society. Winslow Anderson Blenko Glass Company's very first designer was an Alfred University graduate so I hold Alfred Grads in a place of high honor - and Erdos certainly earns that place. Glass Art Society - What's In A Name?
The Glass Art Society! The name doesn't nearly say it all....this group does so much to promote the Glass Arts. But even more impressive for me was the way the 'foster' the student artist. This conference was really all about the 'youth'....there were so many young artist. The conference was very well attended. Artist everywhere - and you could spot them all over Pittsburgh - the the dress, their manner, the slow way they took in the architecture, cameras in hand, but the William Penn Omni have thousands of Glass Arts - so very many students - probably a thousand just female students ( this made me very excited) - Marvin Lipofsky said: "when he watches the students in the commercial vending areas buying their first good blow pipe - the big ones - its exciting for him....when the female students commit to purchasing these pipes, he knows they are committed to the craft" . . .' he remembers a time when there were no women and they wouldn't have been welcome in the shops'- Marvin, has always thought there was a place for the women. He has encourage female students his entire life. After spending only a day with Marvin Lipofsky I realized he is probably one of the most positive people I have ever encounter. To have a teacher like Lipofsky - who refuses to see limits or the world in any given shape or size or constraints - who wants only to create and allow you to develop and create also. WELL he's amazing now and I'll bet 30 years ago he never sat still for even 30 minutes!
While I was disappointed Joel Philip Myers was not in attendance, due to some family illness. He was the topic of conversation at our table - the pioneers I sat with were all his friends - they have traveled with him to Russia, Switzerland, all over the world doing Glass Art lecturers and shows. These men are the founders of the Glass Art Movement in the United States perhaps the World. Henry Halem said " well when we were doing it...me on the east coast, Marvin on the west - organizing most by phone, it was a labor of love, we did it because we love the craft, the art, the students and we love each other - the designers - the teachers - we all knew one another, there was no jealousy, we were just excited to see one of our students, or one of us be recognized, we each tried to open doors for one another. We weren't thinking long term, or realizing how it would grow." I found myself thinking as he spoke THIS IS WHAT ART AND LIFE AND FRIENDSHIP SHOULD BE !
The goal of the Blenko Project was to promote Blenko Glass and bring awareness to BLENKO GLASS s history in West Virginia. So much of the history of Glass Art in the United States isn't recorded and is dying. Marvin, Henry, Joel, Harvey all these men were at BLENKO GLASS if not as employees, they came to work in the factory with their students, they were friends of Mr. Blenko, they valued BLENKO GLASS Company, they were aware of the fine work the craftsmen did. Marvin L. and Henry told me they both had Shorty Finley and Jar Fly Richardson come to their classrooms for years (they paid for them to fly out each year for week) to blow glasss and demonstrate - Henry taught at Kent State in Ohio. Marvin taught mostly in California. The BLENKO connection is wide....I keep finding new BLENKO connections.
The generosity and open mindedness of Mr. Blenko has allowed for University Students and their Professors to visit Blenko and to experience the factory process. I would like to believe that each of those students will also remember BLENKO.
West Virginia's treasure BLENKO GLASS COMPANY was certainly being fondly remembered today in Pittsburgh at a table with a half dozen over 65 PIONEERS all former board members and officers of the Glass Art Society. Each with their own wonderful BLENKO memory.

The Glass Art Society is an international non-profit organization founded in 1971 whose purpose is to encourage excellence, to advance education, to promote the appreciation and development of the glass arts, and to support the worldwide community of artists who work with glass. We hold an annual conference, publish the Glass Art Society Journal, the Membership/Education Roster and the bi-monthly GASNews.
GAS strives to stimulate communication among artists, educators, students, collectors, gallery and museum personnel, art critics, manufacturers, and all others interested in and involved with the production, technology and aesthetics of glass. We are dedicated to creating greater public awareness and appreciation of the glass arts.
Membership is open to anyone interested in glass art - artists, students, educators, collectors, gallery and museum personnel, writers, and critics. Members are entitled to vote, hold office, and enjoy all other rights and privileges as determined by the Society's bylaws.
GAS is made up of a Board (elected annually by the full membership and comprised of at least 75% artist/educators and a student representative), a staff of five and a membership of over 2500 glass enthusiasts from 46 countries.

He participates in international symposia and demonstrations and has exhibited worldwide. Fero is also an educator and has taught at institutions such at Penland School, Urban Glass, the Pratt Fine Arts Center, the Studio of the Corning Museum of Glass, the University of Michigan, Pilchuck Glass School, Bild-Werk, Frauenau, Germany, the International Glass Festival in Stourbridge, UK, and in Seto and the Niijima Glass Art Center in Japan. His work can be found in collections both private and public institutions worldwide.

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Collecting
In ' The Ultimate Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy,' Douglas Adams reveals the secret of flying. Just launch yourself toward the ground and miss.
This is the best advice I know for coping with the fear of 'collecting'. Why not try throwing yourself forward, being willing not to mind if you ' make a mistake' or buy a ' not genuine' item.
Put your walking shoes on and get out there this weekend - - -start a collection. Become passionate about something!
May I recommend (1) shopping at the BLENKO GLASS VISITORS CENTER (304 743 9081) where every item is genuine, handcrafted, made in WVa. (2) Join a Collectors Club - Such as WVA Museum of Glass or the Blenko Collectors Society. This will allow you to become an educated and informed collector.
THE PRIMARY RULE: whatever you collect - allow your self to buy or bring home - - ONLY what you feel passionate about - items that make you smile, bring you pleasure, COLLECT What you LOVE! hjh

many different Face Vases over the years
the ones I collect were designed by Hank
Adams. I am posting a photo. (there are other
designs - I own several but don't have photos)
I believe Wayne Husted also also did a lovely
vase with a face - the imagine of his daughter
in early 2000.

Simple Questions
Richard Bach ' The simplest questions are the most profound. Where were you born? Where is your home? Where are you going? What are you doing? Think about these once in awhile, and watch your answers change.'
Bach wasn't speaking of 'collecting' but the same questions can be asked of a collector - the collector grows as his collection grows.

The West Virginia Birthday - Blenko will be available in less than 15 days. This item is produced yearly. This year West Virginia will celebrate its 144th BIRTHDAY and once again BLENKO GLASS will be making (144 only) a VERY SPECIAL BLENKO ITEM.
The Bayliss Design Team has designed one of the most lovely 'BIRTHDAY PIECES' you can find photos on the BLENKO Company website and also on the Blog.
The designer/ artist pictured above describes the vase as a salute to West Virginia's blue skies and winding rivers. Two upward reaching clover spirals wrap around a sky form reminiscent of rounded hills and mountains in a gesture of freedom and joy.

West Virginia Master Gardener - BLENKO GLASS
The Weekend of June 2nd - The West Virginia Master Gardeners met in Greenbrier County for one of their annual conventions. This is a group of hundreds of West Virginia men and women who love gardening and share their gardening skills with the community through their volunteer activities.
My parents (John and Kay) are long time members. This year and every year the highlight is the Saturday Night LIVE AUCTION - and banquet. The Live Auction is a fund raiser. Of notable interest to my readers were 2 glass items - a BLENKO BRICK (amber)and photo (one brick and photo of the VC garden) sold for $50. Osburn Modern Glass Vase sold for $300. These people LOVE WEST VIRGINIA GLASS! They also know quality when they see it!
Many gardeners like my parents find Blenko Glass products to be useful in their gardens, the large heavy bowls make great Bird Feeders. The animals make great water garden decorations. BLENKO while not recommended for use outdoors - has survived many winters at my folks home on Swarthmore.
The Master Gardeners program also had two keynote speakers: Dave Cavagnaro who spoke on 'The Joys of Edible Gardening and Dr. Hasan Amjad whose topic was Health Benefits of Tea. Donna Walker of Charleston was named Kanawha Master Gardener of the year. Tom Bell was named Cabell County Master Gardener of the Year.

The Blenko Family - Rogal Chapel
The Blenko Family. For me its hard to distinguish between BLENKO GLASS and the Blenko Family. The two are so intertwined in my mind. I have such great admiration and respect for the Company and the Family. Mr. William H (Bill) is an engineer by training - he is a proud Carnegie Mellon graduate. He often tells me stories of his time at Carnegie Mellon where he was a noted athlete as well as a scholar. The stories I love best are about living in the 'frat house', and stories about his family dinners in Pittsburgh. Mr. B loves Carnegie Mellon, almost as much as I love WVU!
Although after spending a day on the Carneige Mellon campus - I can agree with Mr. B -' its one beautiful place.'
While visiting in Pittsburgh this weekend. I had the distinct pleasure of making contact with Dr. Ann Witchner who arranged for me to visit and photograph the stain glass panel donated by Mr. William H Blenko to Carnegie Mellon. The dynamic window was designed by Bruno and constructed by David Parrendo of the Hunt Stain Glass Studio.
The window is located in a small chapel - actually a small interfaith room . . .a very distinguished modern room with dark wood, this very large floor to ceiling stain glass panel covers most of the back wall - the over all effect of the diffused colored light shining inside this small space is one of joy!
The room expressed a quiet, reflective serene, yet joyful, calmness. We sat quietly experiencing the colors and the silence - - - IF I were a Carnegie Mellon student, I think I might find myself often coming to the Rogal Chapel.

We have an ANSWSER - ? about RUBY GLASS
The only red color Blenko has ever used for the catalog was ruby red. Even the speciality lines like Regal and Rialto were made with ruby red.

George Carlin - Blenko Glass
Another Saturday night at Heniz Hall in Pittsburgh, Pa. George Carlin performed tonight. I know Carlin as 'Mister Conductor' on the PBS Children's show 'Shining Time Station'. Most everyone else in the audience knew him from HBO Specials. . . .the audience was mostly over 40 with a few dozen guys from a local fraternity. The audience loved Carlin.
A philosopher some time ago said: "Doubt Everything" . . . Tonight
Carlin's theme was " Doubt Everything!" Perhaps all of life is a re-run? Carlin was 'not' Mister Conductor - he was raunchy -risque and very funny! We we were both embarrassed and entertained. It was great!
As a West Virginia Glass Collector - I found interesting that perhaps Carlin owns a BIG SKY/ BLENKO piece - it was a gift from a fan - who was in the audience, she gave him the BIG SKY piece over 25 years ago- this night she was giving him white roses....but she had photos of herself, her gifts to Carlin, and the many Carlin performances she had attended over the years. She graciously shared her stories and photos with us allowing us to see she and Carlin age in the photo book.
HEINZ HALL is so beautiful, if you haven't been to a show or to hear the Pittsburgh Symphony perform in Heinz Hall its worth the trip - just to see the Hall. The sound is superb. Visually the hall is a masterpiece.

A New Line is Coming! That's the word on the Blenko Company website, we were at the factory this week, and WOW, the colors and the shapes are AWESOME, for one set ...organic is the word that first came to my mind.
When you have made glass for nearly 100 years it must be very difficult to come up with something entirely 'new'....but Arlon Bayliss and his student assistants
M Daniell Nichelson, and Cava Camp from Anderson University have created some designs that are certain to create interest.
It was a pleasure to watch Mr. Bayliss working - he calls the group his design team - I found my self thinking what a wonderful opportunity for students to be part of a factory experience. The exposure, to actually be a part of designing and then working with the factory shop unit that will be creating the design. The experience is priceless.
If you are a student interest in glass design, I'd recommend heading out to Anderson University - and signing up for Arlon Bayliss's classes. He has enormous energy, a passion for design, and such concern for the well being of his students. He is involved in all aspects making certain that their experience is a positive one -and that they are also aware of all aspects of the design and implementation process.
Mr. Bayliss moved around the shop like the conductor of a fine orchestra - checking on various shops and furnaces - the .production was fast - the pace was
intense. He and men of the shop seem to have a non verbal communication.
The Factory seemed very clean, bright, the smells, the visual elements of hot glass. .there is nothing quiet like a glass factory. You must visit.

Richard Blenko - The Face of Blenko

When I was a little kid I thought Richard Blenko had the neatest job - traveling all the time - (he still does over 150 days a year) - promoting BLENKO GLASS COMPANY. Only after turning 20 - did I realize it was a difficult job.
Getting paid to talk about BLENKO! It seemed like the perfect gig to me! Richard always makes everything look easy, he has a ready smile, and seems to never meet a stranger - only new friends. RICHARD IS AN AMBASSADOR FOR WEST VIRGINIA - where ever he goes.... he proudly represents The Glass Arts and the State of WEST VIRIGNIA.
Richard is a very talented man. Had he not been born a BLENKO he might have been a noted film maker (he has produced several documentaries for BLENKO and is a film maker), a Film Star (Richard has movie star 'good looks') he is a very popular PBS Guest - usually 'talking' about Blenko and the arts. Multi - talented Richard Blenko could have been successful in one of a dozen different occupations had he not felt the need to join the 'family business.'
Richard Blenko has devoted his entire life to BLENKO GLASS COMPANY in Milton, West Virginia. I think Richard's gift / his ability to promote was just perfect. Watching him over the years, I knew he loved BLENKO and he made us also love and cherish BLENKO.
Rick, I am so very glad you chose to stay in Milton! I know you would have/ could have been quiet successful in a dozen other occupations but for loyalty to your family and that 'factory.'

South Charleston Museum to Present New Short Films made in WV
On Saturday, June 9th, 2007, at 7 PM The South Charleston Museum will present 90 minutes of
new short films made in West Virginia.
The short films come from three organizations – The Huntington Herald Dispatch website, The Charleston Gazette Gazz website, and The West Virginia Filmmakers Guild. Each organization will present 30 minutes of new short films. Various filmmakers will be present to introduce/talk about their films.

How Do You Mend That Pot?

At a recent talk I heard you answer a question about repairing a glass or clay pot.
I tried to do what you said but it didn't work.
Can you repeat the instructions?

Thank you for writing. The repair 'solution' idea - belongs to Harry Wise of Charleston, WV - a Master Gardener and friend. He suggested to me
that I used GOOP - available at Lowe's or Pyle Hardware. Clean the pot or large glass container, use plastic window screen cut to size, and spread generous amount of goop then add the screen. After its dry add more GOOP over the screen. Let is dry for several days. We have saved several large expensive clay pots this way. Others report having saved 'glass pots'. I don't own the larger glass pots. Hillary

One of the most dynamic colors is also the oldest color used by humans: red.
Prehistoric horses drawn in red pigment gallop across the ancient cave walls in Lascaux, France. Venice has been a preeminent glass center since the 16th century. European factories and designers for centuries have emulated the city's success by adapting or copying designs associated with the Venetian masters.
In the second half of the 20th century, American artists and designers also started looking to Venice for inspiration, many of them traveling to Venice to work directly with the masters in the factories. These Americans returned to the States and invigorated the country's rapidly growing and flourishing studio glass movement. This flourishing interest in the art of glassmaking prompted Venetian masters to travel to the United States to teach and also to learn; a dialogue between artists began. Venice instilled in the Americans discipline, technical skills, and a new appreciation for color. America gave the Venetians the freedom to challenge and to question.
This exhibition, part of Pittsburgh’s 2007 Year of Glass celebration, will examine the links between Venice and America and their significance, from mid-1950s sculptor Robert Willson’s exploratory visit to Murano and the commissioning of work from American designers by the Venini factory to present-day artists, such as Lino Tagliapietra and Josiah McElheny. The exhibition will present approximately 100 works, which will also be illustrated in the accompanying catalogue.
Viva Vetro! Glass Alive! is organized by Carnegie Museum of Art. The exhibition is supported by Pittsburgh Celebrates Glass. Additional support was provided by the Henry L. Hillman Fund, The Fellows of Carnegie Museum of Art, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
The exhibition catalogue was made possible by The Beal Publication Fund and the Henry Lea Hillman, Jr. Foundation.

The Question: HOW DO THEY DO THAT?
The color is created by something like layering. It's called casing. The gatherer gets one color, the covers that with another color and so one. If I'm not mistaken Tequila Sunrise is started with an Opaline yellow/green, this is then coated with ruby, which will be reheated to make tangerine. You can usually see the clear tangerine cased color at the bottom. Occasionally a blue rim or decoration is added..

Gosh! My 10 day break passed to quickly. It was a productive break, we saw Tony Bennett perform, went to Chihuly glass exhibit, studied for national boards, visited THE PURPLE MOON, Taylors Book, Ellen's Ice Cream, Clay center, JMalad Glass, Art Glass Shop & more, we also spent some time with Mr. Bill Blenko and friends at the factory, but more importantly began new friendships.

2007 WV Birthday Piece Unveiled
In its first collaboration with Bayliss Design Team, Blenko Glass has created a very special piece to celebrate West Virginia's 144th Birthday. The team's international experience and fresh approach to design combines with the unique skills of Blenko's glass workers. This collaboration has resulted in an object that salutes West Virginia's blue skies and winding rivers.
Two upward reaching clover spirals wrap around a sky blue form reminiscent of rounded hills and mountains in a gesture of freedom and joy. Arlon Bayliss, the team's leader states: "We wanted our first design for Blenko to be very special. Not only is it a privilege to work with this great West Virginia company, it's an additional honor to design a piece that specifically celebrates this beautiful state."
He goes on to say, "This vase was inspired not only by the area's natural wonders. it's also a symbol of a unique collaborative experience between our design team and Blenko, and between Blenko and West Virginia"
Bayliss' co-leader and partner, Mary Jo Andersen adds: "This has been an incredible experience for us in so many ways. I can't think of a more fitting 'Thank you' for both Blenko and West Virginia.*Information taken from http://www.blenkoglass.com/*

It's a well known fact that I have this BLENKO bias - my world seems to always involve looking for a Blenko connection, or a way to inspire others to be connected to the glass arts and in particular the Blenko Glass Factory.
So much of BLENKO's history is undocumented - In my research I often heard Joel Myers was the Blenko Designer who inspired, and was inspired by others,that JPM wanted to connect with other artist - that he encouraged many other young artist, it is often said that he was a natural teacher and most generous with other artist. . .JPM liked to work with others, to teach, to learn from and with them, he occasionally would invite glass artist of note down to Milton - to work after hours with him or alone on projects.
Until Wednesday I had no real confirmation of this information. Marvin Lipofsky's note confirms that JPM was indeed someone who reached out to be connected to the 'ART WORLD and felt that all Glass Artist should be Connected'. Joel Philip Myers and Marvin Lipofsky both noted educators and leaders of the Glass Art World. THESE photos are slides provided by M. Lipofsky of his time at Blenko.
This week we received this lovely note and some slides from Marvin Lipofsky - I'm posting a part of the note. "In 1968, Joel Phillip Myers invited me to visit him and work after hours at the factory, which these photos show. We had met in 1964 at the First World congress of Craftsmen at Columbia University, NY. While at Blenko, I did a series of sculptures working by myself at the furnace. This work was exhibited in 1969 in a one-man exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts, NY, NY (now the Museum of Crafts and Design), and also at the Lee Nordness Gallery, NY, NY. "

Marvin Lipofsky (b. September 1, 1938) is an American glass artist. He was a central figure in the spread of the American studio glass movement, introducing it to California. Lipofsky was born in Barrington, Illinois. In 1962, he earned a BFA in Industrial Design from the University of Illinois, and he went on to earn both an MS and an MFA in Sculpture from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1964. There he studied under Harvey Littleton, the founder of the studio glass movement. He would introduce the concepts of the movement during his subsequent stint as a Design instructor at the University of California, Berkeley, where he taught until 1972. During this time, he was responsible for training many studio artists. In 1967, he founded the glass program at the California College of Arts and Crafts, which he headed for two decades. He was also a founder of the Glass Art Society, and has served as editor of its journal. Lipofsky was one of the first American glass artists to travel to Czechoslovakia, where a studio glass movement had arisen in the 1950s. This would prove to be the first of many trips he would take; he became well-known for his journeys abroad and his collaboration with numerous glass artists around the world. Many of Lipofsky's works are colorful "bubbles" of glass, often semi-translucent to allow the viewer to examine their depths. He is also known for works inspired by pop culture he crafted in the 1970s; these include the "Great American Food Series," consisting of sculptures such as hamburgers and pickles crafted from glass. Genoa Elementary School - History Repeats Itself...
Thursday. History Repeats Its self - who said this?Today we were at Blenko. As always it was an exciting morning. Randy Rider was in the lead chair - blowing glass. A group of young eager grade school children accompanied by their teachers watching from the observation area. The looks on their faces , mouths open , eyes wide open . .the intensity, the questions to their teachers, the delightful expressions when they saw the hot molten glass being formed into a 'recognizable shape'.
It brought me back a decade and half,to a time when I was standing there watching Shorty Finley ( much like Randy Rider today - the master - blowing glass) .
It's never to early to bring your children to BLENKO or to start to teach them about the heritage and crafts of our great State. This group was brought by their teachers, and most children come for the first time with a SCHOOL group. Many then ask their parents to bring them back.
Visiting Blenko Glass and the other WV Hand Crafted Shops / Manufacturers is important. If your school doesn't have a trip planned for this year speak with your PTO or Administration and start to plan one for next year. Blenko Glass has several educational videos and a new cd that explains the entire glass making process.
You may phone 304 743 9081 and speak with Angie or Diane to get the hours. Its free! It is a great opportunity to learn about Glass making and to see West Virginia's ONLY Antique Glass producing facility.

CHIHULY - TONY BENNETT & BLENKO
Guru of glass, Dale Chihuly was in Pittsburgh from Tuesday - Monday. Chilhuly was there for the opening celebration of the CHILHULY at PHIPPS: Gardens & Glass . Fantastic ! Spectacular! Breathtaking! These are all adjectives I used to describe the Chilhuly at the Huntington Museum of Art. These pieces are much larger. The exhibit makes you reach for all the obvious adjectives in an impossible attempt to describe its staggering beauty. It deserves them all.
Chilhuly dressed as always in mostly black with his black eye patch looking quiet handsome in a aging cherub sort of way. He moves like an angel, and as you watch him move you know that he has the ability to create as easily as he walks.
A dazzling visual experience surprises at every turn in the Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in Schenley Park. Spaces were designed for to sculptures that rise up from the gardens in a frenzy of color. Yet, the glass fantasies are so perfectly integrated they seem to have flowered there forever. Sublime colored reeds, undulated shapes and monumental sunbursts soar to the skies. Glass balls of every size and shape and shade spill over a weather boat and into a pond. A surreal chandelier casts amber shafts of light on the foliage below and flamboyant frilly edged bowls float over a sunken garden.
If your summer travel plans have you any where near Pittsburgh, I recommend stopping to visit this exhibit.
We later went to hear TONY BENNETT at the Heinz Hall . The Heinz Hall has to be one of the most Beautiful Halls in the country. Tony Bennett is a legend. He spoke of singing with Lena Horn ( he opened with her in Heinz Hall 25+ years ago), and told stories of Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby, and Duke Ellington. All in all it was a great evening for the Geritol Set and one under 30 Dent Student. hjh

The coffee and home made foods are excellent, the selection of books (many local authors and a wide selection of magazines), are current. The Art Studio has a large selection of the finest local handcrafted items for sale. This is a wonderful little oasis. Art Classes are also offered for children and adults. In July, Nora Mosrie will be teaching 'Intro to Acrylic Painting. Jim Hores will be teaching Wheel Turning & Handbuilding in May. Wheel Turning in The Afternoon will be taught in June by Tricia Fox. If you are visiting the Capital City anytime in the near future add Taylor Books to your list of places to visit. Its sure to become a favorite. I visit every Saturday morning that I'm in Charleston. ERIC EYRE - State Of Decay
Monday - Charleston Gazette Section D - was the final installment of Eric Eyre's series focusing on oral health problems in West Virginia. You must go on line or find a Gazette paper and view this series. It makes great dinner / debate conversation.
Eyre reminds us that 20 percent of West Virginia's population live in households NOT connected to a public water system and use well water instead. West Virginia has the sixth lowest percentage of people using public water in the nation. This means 20% of our population has no Fluoride treatment. The CDC has listed water fluoridation as one of the 10 greatest public health achievements of the past 100 years.
If you haven't read the series please do, and if you haven't seen your dentist for regular cleanings, make it a priority and start now . . . . don't loose your teeth . . . someone gave me a
needlepoint pillow that states: A tooth is more valuable than diamonds!
Start now to protect the dental health care of your children. hjh
This afternoon, I'll be taking photos of BLENKO GLASS at the Art Shop in Taylor's Bookstore, The Clay Center and at the Purple Moon on Capitol Street. We'll be posting information about the BLENKO available at both sites and photos of the BLenko.

Blenko In The Yard . . - Mother's Day Gifts
Mother's Day is fast approaching. The most common gifts include dinner and flowers - if you choose flowers - please ask your florist to place your arrangement in a BLENKO GLASS vase. Milton Florist in Milton, WVa. and most FTD Florist can and will do this if requested.*

BATCHING BLENKO - From Start to Finish
A CD Rom BATCHING BLENKO - FROM Start to Finish is now available at BLENKO GLASS Visitor Center or by mail. The cost is less than $10. This item is a great educational tool. If you are a classroom teacher consider purchasing this item for your classroom. You may preview the film at the Blenko Company Website. This CD could be used for class room viewing before the field trip to BLENKO. The color is intense, it isn't too long, it doesn't require any explanation. You will be very pleased.

Note: The Martini Glass (the shape) has fascinated me since before junior high, my collection started early. . . the bar ware items in this photo are mostly vintage, mostly made in WV (look 4 exceptions), you need to identify the manufacturer if possible, if someone identifies the company and another reader has the line name or color then obviously the winner will be person with most correct information.

Blenko - Always A Reflection of Quality
When I was about 10 years old Mr. Bill Blenko gave me this RR emblem (see photo) it seems while in a conversation with my parents he learned I coveted the Rolls Royce auto, cutting out photos, etc., probably after having seen one in a movie.
I was delighted with the clear glass free standing RR - it sat atop my bookshelf for a decade, while the intensity of my desire to own a Rolls Royce faded, I kept the small glass RR .
It seems behind each 'unusual' Blenko item there is a story. Just recently I learned the story of my 'RR.' Mr. Walter Blenko of Pittsburgh Mr. WH (Bill) Blenko Jr 's Cousin is the proud owner of several Rolls Royce autos and is a member of the Rolls Royce Club of America. Mr Walter Blenko commissioned Blenko Glass Company ( after all his grandfather was the founder) to make the RR as a gift for each member who attended the national RRCA meeting.
Although a very generous and thoughtful gift from Mr. Walter Blenko this little glass keep sake is probably long forgotten by most attending the RRCA meeting that year. It now sits on the dresser in my college home, a reminder of a simpler time , when having a Rolls Royce on your bulletin board was cool. hjh

This is also true of BLENKO GLASS Collectors. There are collectors who collect only one color, one designer, one year, one line, items from one catalogue, those who have warehouses full of Blenko.
The Texas Blenko Collectors - I always seem to envy the Texas Collectors, they have a well established study group, a definite structure, an established schedule, they work together, they share information, they enjoy glass and one another. ' They' are what belonging to a good glass group is all about. Unselfish love, wanting the whole to be better than the individual, or knowing the whole will be improved as the individual grows.
Many folks start collecting BLENKO because of another collection, perhaps you collect OWLS, RAMS, PIGS, Squirrels, Barn yard Animals, Frogs, Angels . . . . you get the IDEA . . . BLENKO makes all of these . . . .and so many other items.
In my own life, I find sometimes the 'search for' the item is such fun. For nearly 10 years I had 'looked' for a black top hat, and a Blenko water bottle with a handle. Last year Karin and Tim Alonzo were kind enough to introduce me to their friend who was selling a water bottle with handle ( I d love another), and this year Billy at Dixie's phoned to say he 'found' a Black Top Hat! It's exciting to find ' Blenko'. But the search is so much fun.
If you don't collect Blenko. Think about getting started. Before you buy, learn as much as you can, so you don't become a warehouse. You should have knowledge, know what you want to buy, and what you should expect to pay. Then go out and look for the item. Ask questions and be open to making new friends along the way. Some time ago I posted a list of antique / resale / glass stores in the Huntington area (sent in by readers) I expect to have some free time next week and while I won't be driving to Huntinton, I will go to visit the Purple Moon on Capitol Street (new to me) a resale store whose owner seems to be channeling my inner child (simple line decor and vintage blenko).
Remember the BLENKO COLLECTORS SOCIETY will be holding their annual meeting, Milton, West Virginia in August. You don't have to be a member to go - you may find yourself wanting to join after you visit with these folk.
