Marvin Lipofsky - A Glass Odyssey

Marvin Lipofsky: A Glass Odyssey

Editor Suzanne Baizerman. Publisher: University of Washington Press.

NOTE: PHOTOS OF BLENKO FACTORY WORKERS
and Marvin at Blenko in this publication.

The book was described as a catalogue that provides an opportunity to examine the full range of lipofsky's work, including his less well known early sculpture, his early series- such as the California Loop Series and the Great American Food Series - conceptual works and works on paper.California artist Marvin Lipofsky has achieved international stature in the studio glass movement as an artist, an educator, and a global ambassador. his art has taken him on an odyssey across the world- from the Czech Republic to the People's Republic of China and many point in between ( Milton, WVa). In his travels he has worked with master glassblowers and factors workers (BLENKO GLASS), forming the basis for his sculpture. Back in his studio in Berkeley, California, keeping a steady focus on the sculptural potential of the material, he works with the glass, cutting, etching, polishing until it reaches to final form.Lipofsky began his forty-year career in glass at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in the first group of students taught by Harvey Littleton, the pioneering teacher of studio glass. From there Lipofsky established the second studio glass program in the country at the University of California, Berkeley. Later he founded the glass program at the California College of Arts and Crafts. In addition to college-level teaching. Lipofsky has lectured and lead workshop throughout the world.

The Book is a PHOTO BOOK of Lipofsky work. It contains a brief biography of Lipofsky .Delightful, Beautiful Photos and lots of information about the early Glass Movement. The hardbound copy would make a great coffee table book, or a wonderful gift for a glass enthusiast.Available on amazon.com and www.washington.edu/uwpress .

Lipofsky has a WV connection - during his first trip to Blenko (1968) to work with Joel Phillip Myers making sevral glass sculptures that were exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts in NYC he became friends with the Factory Workers ( Shorty Finley, Jarfly, Lewis Powers, Jessie Carpenter) and with Mr. WH BLenko (who was to become the CEO) Marvin maintained those friendships. hjh

Damon Crain Article MODERNISM MAGAZINE

BLENKO ARTICLE by Damon Crain in Modernism Magazine! Click here: Modernism Magazine
Title: Blenko Glass for Museum and the Masses.....A combination of inspired design direction and savvy marketing enabled Blenko’s extraordinary success at mid century.

IF you collect BLENKO or other WVA Glass you know the name Damon Crain. He is the creator of the beautiful photoart showcasing Blenko. Damon is a frequent contributor to the WV Glass Museums magazine and is on the Board of Directors. He is one of four people I frequently go to for answers.

Damon is a much sought after speaker about fine arts, he writes most frequently about American Art Glass. Damon shares our love of Blenko. Damon ever so modest suggest Modernism article was based on the same core information as the NAGC article from this spring. Hey that magazine is for members only - and we don't belong - so for us this is all NEW. Modernism Magazine has a huge circulation and if you all buy a copy, or even better subscribe as I am doing today. Damon Crain's effort to have a major article about Blenko in a magazine with a large circulation shouldn't go unnoticed. Blenko Glass has long been blessed with people like Damon Crain who promote BLENKO GLASS quietly without fanfare. This group of people working under the radar for years have been a major reason BLENKO is always in the news.

The Modernism article on Blenko Glass focus is on incorporating the correlation to the larger, legitimizing cultural forces of art, design & museum recognition.

Here is a copy of his recent announcement about the publication - which I suggest you rush out and purchase!

News from www.vmglasshouse.comMight I humbly suggest that you rush out this very minute and purchase a copy of the fall issue of Modernism Magazine? Aside from being the pre-eminent publication on mid-century and Modernist design, this issue of Modernism contains a new feature article of mine on vintage Blenko glass with mouth-watering photos.Modernism Magazine may be purchased at national bookstore chains, including Barnes & Noble and Borders, as well as many other locations. Find a location near you at this link: http://www.modernismmagazine.com/wheretobuy.htmlAlternately you may purchase it online directly from them at: http://www.modernismmagazine.com/currentissue.html Take a look at the Denver Post's article on vintage glass in which I ( Damon) am quoted several times:http://www.denverpost.com/search/ci_6689157While we are at it, why not see what UK's The Guardian has to say about Blenko(BUY!)

Chihuly - Huntington Museum and Phipps in Pittsburgh

Patrick Dale Chihuly is probably the most well known glass artist in America. In Southern West Virginia we're most fortunate to have a wonderful Chihuly sculpture on permanent display at the Huntington Museum of Art Click here: Huntington Museum of Art, Huntington, WV .

In Pittsburgh at the Phipps ... Phipps Conservatory & Botanical Gardens. 1 Schenley Park Pittsburgh, PA 15213 Click here: Phipps until November 11 a very costly exhibit is on display. It took months to plan and establish this exhibit - its in and around water, it is the most beautiful, overwhelming sight.
Pittsburgh is a short 2 - 3 hour drive. There are a number of great restaurants. It could be a very long day trip, or a great over night visit. We did priceline.com for a great rate at the Wyndham Hotel ($89 for 3people) the hotel shuttle drove us to and from downtown many times ( a free service) - so we avoided the parking tickets, and the city traffic.
This exhibit is one you will want to see, and return with friends to see again, its just beyond words....even if you don't like glass...the plants...the sounds....great photo opportunities.

Huntington Museum of Art - Alex Booth Collection

Click here: Huntington Museum of Art, Huntington, WV Saturday Sept 28 - Jan 13
Opening Reception 5:30 - 7:30pm Sept 28th
in conjunction with the opening of "Passionate Gatherings/Private Worlds: Works from Tri State Collections."
Alex Booth Collection.
My Mom sent me a clipping of article by Bob Schwartz, she and my Dad plan to attend and I thought you guy might like to hear about this event and also plan to attend. The Huntington Museum of Art has many unique collections of GLASS among its treasures. The one thing that keeps drawing me back is the Chihuly (donated by the Polan family - for a small Museum to own such a dramatic piece ... well it says a lot about the City of Huntington!)

This event will feature (23) donations by Alex Booth was a Coal broker, his donation includes a Joel Philip Myers (blenko designer) piece. A portrait of Samuel Finley Morse's small daughter by Morse, a pretty fair painter before he gave it up and invented the telegraph. An earthenware camel from the Tang Dynasty, China (A.D. 618-907). If you attend be kind enough to send photos so we can post them.

The Alex Booth Collection is eclectic and should have something to please most everyone, some folks just have great eyes for beauty and quality. If you go, take this opportunity to re visit the Chihuly.

(internet info about Chihuly)
Chihuly graduated from high school in Tacoma. Supported by his mother, after his brother George's death in a flight-training accident in Florida and his father's death of a heart attack, he enrolled at the College of the Puget Sound (now University of Puget Sound) in 1959. A year later, he transferred to the University of Washington at Seattle, where he studied interior design, architecture and glassblowing.
In 1967, he received a Masters of Science in glassblowing from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 1968, he received a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture at the Rhode Island School of Design, where he later helped establish the school's glass program. In that year, he also received a Fulbright Fellowship, and went on to become the first American glassblower to work in the prestigious Venini Fabrica on the island of Murano. Along with several other glass artists, Chihuly founded the influential Pilchuck Glass School in 1971 in Stanwood, Washington.

Chihuly's Glowing Gemstone Polyvitro Chandelier hangs in the Joslyn Art Museum.
Chihuly lives and works in his 25,000 square foot (2300 m²) studio, nicknamed "The Boathouse" for its former use, on Lake Union. Since losing the vision in one of his eyes in an automobile accident in 1976, Chihuly (who wears an eyepatch) no longer has the depth perception necessary to handle the molten glass himself. Instead, he conceptualizes each project with paint and canvas and then employs a team of artists to do the work. In 1991, Chihuly began his Niijima Floats Series Niijima Floats Series, some of the largest blown glass pieces in the world, at the Niijima International Glass Art Festival in Japan.

Chihuly's work is a story of his life. His fascination with abstract nature forms comes from his mother's garden in Tacoma, Washington. Also, his love for the ocean and its creatures is reflected in his work. Over the past forty years, Chihuly’s glass sculptures have explored color, design, and assemblage. Although his work varies in size and color, he is best known for his multipart blown masterpieces. Also interested in Irish culture, he has produced a sizeable volume of "Irish cylinders,"photo which are more modest in conception than his fanciful blown glass works.
Some of Chihuly's works cover whole ceilings of casinos and hotels, while others are mere palm-size abstract flowers. Chihuly uses intense, vibrant colors and linear decoration to bring his work to life; almost all of his works are vibrantly colored. He is also known for using neon and argon. Chihuly is best known for using nature and its surroundings as a setting for his pieces, and for creating his pieces as though they are part of nature. He sometimes entwines his pieces in tree branches and around tree trunks. He also suspends them in space and floats them in water.

MEN IN PRINT - Alan Greenspan & Marvin Lipofsky

I'll add photos tomorrow scanner isn't working! Great photos coming!!!
This week Ms. B and I reviewed two awesome books, the first Alan Greenspan's The Age Of Turbulence this book because economics fascinates me and Alan Greenspan like me is a Libertarian. This is a 'must read' before the November election.

The second book Marvin Lipofsky: A Glass Odyssey Editor Suzanne Baizerman. Publisher: University of Washington Press. The book was described as a catalogue that provides an opportunity to examine the full range of lipofsky's work, including his less well known early sculpture, his early series- such as the California Loop Series and the Gream American Food Series - conceptual works and works on paper.

Marvin Lipofsky (b. September 1, 1938) is an American glass artist. He was a central figure inthe spread of the American studio glass movement, introducing it to California.

Lipofsky was born in Barrington, Illinois. In 1962, he earned a BFA in Industrial Design from the University of Illinois, and he went on to earn both an MS and an MFA in Sculpture from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1964. There he studied under Harvey Littleton, the founder of the studio glass movement. He would introduce the concepts of the movement during his subsequent stint as a Design instructor at the University of California, Berkeley, where he taught until 1972. During this time, he was responsible for training many studio artists.
In 1967, he founded the glass program at the California College of Arts and Crafts, which he headed for two decades. He was also a founder of the Glass Art Society, and has served as editor of its journal.
Lipofsky was one of the first American glass artists to travel to Czechoslovakia, where a studio glass movement had arisen in the 1950s. This would prove to be the first of many trips he would take; he became well-known for his journeys abroad and his collaboration with numerous glass artists around the world.
Many of Lipofsky's works are colorful "bubbles" of glass, often semi-translucent to allow the viewer to examine their depths. He is also known for works inspired by pop culture he crafted in the 1970s; these include the "Great American Food Series," consisting of sculptures such as hamburgers and pickles crafted from glass. He is known for his surface treatments and for the organic form of his pieces.
(internet info on Lipofsky / Greenspan)
Lipofsky's work is exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Corning Museum of Glass, the Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto, Japan, the Museums of Decorative Arts in both Bulgaria and Canada, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
He resides in Berkeley, California.

.Alan Greenspan (born March 6, 1926 in New York City) is an American economist and was Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve of the United States from 1987 to 2006. Following his retirement as Fed chairman, the self-described "lifelong libertarian Republican ," accepted an honorary (unpaid) position at HM Treasury in the United Kingdom.
First appointed Fed chairman by President Ronald Reagan in August 1987, he was reappointed at successive four-year intervals until retiring after a record-setting tenure on January 31, 2006, at which time he relinquished the chairmanship to Ben Bernanke. Greenspan was lauded for his handling of the Black Monday stock market crash that occurred very shortly after he first became chairman, as well as for his stewardship of the Internet-driven, "dot-com" economic boom of the 1990s. However, this expansion culminated in a stock market bubble burst in March 2000 followed by a recession beginning in late 2000 and continuing through 2002.
From 2001 until his retirement, he was increasingly criticized for some statements seen as overstepping the Fed's traditional purview of monetary policy, and viewed by others as overly supportive of the policies of President George W. Bush, as well as for policies seen as leading to a housing bubble. Greenspan was nonetheless still generally considered during that time to be the leading authority on American domestic economic and monetary policy, and his active influence continues to this day.
Biography
Greenspan was born in 1926 to a German Jewish family in the Washington Heights area of New York City. He studied clarinet at The Juilliard School from 1943 to 1944. He is an accomplished saxophone player who has played with Stan Getz. While in college, he played in a jazz band. He then attended New York University (NYU), and received a B.S. in Economics (summa cum laude) in 1948, and an M.A in Economics in 1950. Greenspan went on to Columbia University, intending to pursue advanced economic studies, but subsequently dropped out. Much later, in 1977, NYU also awarded him a Ph.D. in Economics. He did not complete a dissertation,[citation needed] normally required for that degree. On December 14, 2005, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Commercial Science from NYU, his fourth degree from that institution.
Starting in 1950, Greenspan began a 20-year association with famed novelist and philosopher Ayn Rand. He wrote for Rand’s newsletters and authored several essays in her book Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal.
From 1948 to 1953, Greenspan worked as an economic analyst at The Conference Board, a business and industry oriented think-tank in New York City. From 1955 to 1987, Greenspan was Chairman and President of Townsend-Greenspan & Co., Inc., an economic consulting firm in New York City, a 33-year stint interrupted only from 1974 to 1977 by his service as Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers under President Gerald Ford. In the summer of 1968, Greenspan agreed to serve Richard Nixon and the rest is HIS(s)TORY.

Anniversary of Heart of Glass

Today is the anniversary of the Heart of Glass Blog. Over 14 months ago Ed Dawson of the Hearld ask me to blog - I didn't know what 'blogging' was. The online editor Andre Copley-Smith held my hand for the first month, introduced me to This Is Not My Blog and several other great Blogs . . . in an attempt to acclimate me to good blog writing style. Not a lot has changed. My relationship with electronics remains the same - I love gadgets, they often break . Time - there is never enough! etc.

With special thanks to my blog mentor Chris, web master Steve R., Blenko project gofor Maggie
and to each of you for reading and responding. You have all aided in my desire to have everyone become AWARE of BLENKO GLASS and the relationship of GLASS MAKING to WEST VIRGINIA and West Virgina's Heritage.

Advocacy and awareness remain the focus of this blog.

Thanks for reading!

HJH & Miss B

I'm Reprinting the 2006 Sept 20th post for HEART OF GLASS.

This blog will focus on the Blenko Glass Company located in Milton, West Virginia. Twice weekly I'll post on Blenko and WV Glass topics, once a month the post will feature an employee or designer from the present or past. Biweekly I'll post photos of individual Blenko made items, and items that are currently available from Blenko. We will offer some background information on the piece and perhaps the steps/ process used to make the item. I am NOT a fine arts major, a glass expert or an English/Journalism major. I don't have all the glass answers. I am inquisitive, don't mind asking people for answers - I believe in lifelong learning. This blog will I hope be a place where we can learn together. If you have been to the Blenko Factory, or are a retired or former glass worker or just have photos of unusual Blenko and / or Blenko stories to share - this is the place - I'd love to see/hear them. For the last 2 years I have spent all my free time traveling to meet former Blenko and other glass workers and designers. I want to learn more about Blenko and W. Va. made glass. . . and I want YOU to THINK before buy glass...who made the glass. The number of glass factories in the US has declined by almost 72% in the last 15 years.Together we can stop this trend. Be an advocate for MADE IN WV.Blenko Glass Factory is located in Milton, W.Va., less than 20 minutes from Huntington, W. Va.

Vintage Blenko

In 4th grade I did my first BLENKO PROJECT, it was for the State Social Science Fair. We interviewed Richard Blenko.
My passions were Dance, Drama, Music, my Chemistry Set, going to Blenko for scrap glass and having sleep overs with my friends.
It was a simpler time. While I still love dance, good theater, movies, music, the chemistry set is long gone and forgotten.
IF you have Blenko from the early 90s its definitely increased in value. We'd love to have your photos and stories of your Blenko from the 60s to 90s.
BLENKO GROWS MORE BEAUTIFUL WITH AGE!
Tomorrow Sept 20, we will again celebrate a Blog anniversary.

The Influence of OPRAH

The news has been full of stories about the Influence of OPRAH. Much of this in regard to the Presidential Candidates, and her endorsement of Obama.

In my family we knew of the influence of OPRAH long ago. My Mom speaks of OPRAH the way many people speak of the Pope, or Smith Barney.

The O List was often the source of our gifts. We read books from the Oprah Book Club - well actually My Mom and her friends read the books, then passed them on to me. I must admit all were very good selections. Same for the O LIST each item is high quality.

One positive mention by OPRAH and you are off and running! Unknown designers have become famous overnight, little read authors are now household names. The Power of O!

If OPRAH ever discovered the only American producer of Antique Glass, West Virginians'

BLENKO GLASS - if she saw the beautiful colors, the shapes. She'd be hooked. After all, its a known fact with the finer things of life - likes attract!

YOUR QUESTION - Value of Glass

The question: Should I pay more a signed piece of Blenko?
Response: Signed glass or glass signed by the artist or the CEO/ President of the Company is more valuable. Few items are signed.
Often times only glass of high quality is considered for signature.
Readers, do you have comments, would you pay more for signed pieces? Why or Why not.
Photo of William H Blenko CEO of Blenko Glass Co. Milton, WV signing Blenko Glass.
Note: BLENKO GLASS Visitors Center - Milton has a table of SIGNED GLASS. Signed Glass is currently and most always available for purchase at BLENKO GLASS in Milton. It is more costly but makes for an impressive gift. I use my Blenko daily for drinks, serving, etc- these items I wouldn't want signed as they are washed so often. Blenko Glass - Visit the Factory and Visitors Shop there are items available from $5 to $250+ you are certain to find something you'll LOVE!

White Coat Ceremony

September 15, 2007 - Saturday the WVU Dental School Class of 2009 received their White Coats, in an afternoon ceremony.

This is a rite of passage - for all professional schools. Medical / Pharmacy/ Dental.

This year Mr. WH Blenko CEO of Blenko Glass Milton, WV gifted each member of my class a 2x4 cobalt blue etched in Gold by Touch of Glass. We presented these very quietly after the white coat induction ceremony.

Blenko Glass often works with schools, Universities, wedding parties to provide these paper weights engraved with whatever you desire. The cost per unit varies depending upon the engraving - some Universities sell the paperweights as class fund raisers and offer personalized with individual names for an additional $15. I think the paper weight with basic engraving is about $22 per unit.

My classmates and I were very surprised and pleased by Mr. Blenko's generosity.

I hope the Class of 2010 will consider White Coat Paper Weights as a class project.

Note: Info about WCC :The white coat ceremony (WCC) is a relatively new ritual in some medical schools and pharmacy schools that marks a medical student's transition from the study of preclinical to clinical health sciences. At some schools, where students begin meeting patients early in their education, the white coat ceremony is held before the first year begins. It originated in Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1993[1] and involves a formal "robing" or "cloaking" of students in white coats, the garb physicians have traditionally worn for over 100 years[2] and other health professions have adopted.
WCCs typically address the issue of medical ethics and praise rising 3rd year students for their success in completing the basic science portion of medical school. A reading of the Hippocratic Oath is common, and family and friends are typically invited. Over 100 medical schools in the USA now have a WCC and many students now consider it a rite of passage in the journey toward a medical career.

How Do You Measure Success?

How Do You Measure Success?

When I was a child I thought I'd be a 'success' when I could afford to buy my Dad really good seat at WVU's Mountaineer Field along with a great parking space. Well not a lot has changed over the years.
My Dad still parks in the Blue Lot and he now sits in Touch Down Terrace, but keeps his 4 seats in section #127 on the 30 yard line so that if my Moms health ever improves they can move back.
What I didn't realize as a child - was my Dad had decent seats and a fairly good parking space and success is measured can be measured a multitude of ways . . .

How have you measured success in your own life?

Blenko Glass in Milton has been and remains successful, it is one of the few remaining American hand blown glass manufacturers in America. I think Blenko has measures success in its ability to meet market demands, but also its most unique ability to be a family oriented company.
Most every employee of Blenko Glass is a relative of a former Blenko Employee. The number of retired Blenko Employees is very high.
It is fairly common to find Blenko Employees who are 50 years old with 30 years of service to Blenko. Blenko Glass values its employees and the employees are very loyal to Blenko.
All this says alot about the company and the employee. The SUCCESS of the Company and the SUCCESS of the employee. The ability to work well together, the ability to produce an excellent product. A West Virginia product that West Virginians are proud of.
The final product, the hand crafted glass that you purchase in the Visitors Center or on line is produced by these Blenko employees, all West Virginians. Long term Blenko Glass employees, men who learned the skills on the job. At Blenko each employee is a member of a team and also a member of the Blenko family.
Blenko remains successful, regardless of the definition of Success.

Paradise Is Where I AM - Voltaire

This Labor Day Weekend I drove home to Charleston. Spent time at Blenko Glass, and time with friends and family .
Having time to joyfully engage in the things you care about is a great gift. A lesson learned this year.
How fortunate we are to live in a small friendly state, where people stop to offer help to those in need, where we know our neighbors, and share in their times of happiness and sorrow.
Take some time this week to find pleasure in what you have, where you are, who you are with.
Life is a treasure. Living in West Virginia can be, if one chooses to view it as a gift. West Virginia is made up of many treasures. The wonderful mountains, rivers, beautiful majestic scenery.
Blenko Glass Company - the only manufacture of antique glass in the United States located in Milton, is one of West Virginia's many treasures.

SMART WOMEN FOOLISH CHOICES

* NOTE: BLENKO Is Always a Wise Choice!
For my recent 23rd birthday a very dear friend gave me a vintage copy of the 1985 book Smart Women Foolish Choices.
The techniques Drs. Cowan and Kinder perscribe for finding the right man and avoiding the wrong ones...can be use when searching for the perfect addition to your COLLECTIONS.
  1. Broaden Not Lower Your Expectations! Be open to new designers, new colors and new companies.... NOTE: BUY ONLY MADE IN USA GLASS.
  2. Avoid All Too Common Types. Regardless of how cute, sweet, or colorful .. LEAVE THEM - bring home only the VERY SPECIAL!
  3. Recognize 'Diamonds in the Rough' Some times you'll find the very best find...in an unusual location, or covered with dust...Don't over look an item of BLENKO because it isn't perfect. NOTHING IS PERFECT! Embrace the air bubble or small flaw as a symbol the item was hand crafted and is one of a kind!

IF you didn't read this book in the mid 80s and I must admit it was published before I could officially speak...find a copy. Chapters entitled: (1) Waiting for the Prince (independent, self centered, emotionally closed, unwilling to make a lasting commitment Prince)....could also be true of the local glass vendor. (2) Letting Go of Expectations/ Hidden Illusions (3) Longing vs Loving. There is more...but the authors say always leave them wanting more....so I will quit now.

This is a MUST READ before you hit the MILTON FLEA MARKET in search of new TREASURES for your collection. hjh
