Heart of Glass - Blenko Glass

Blenko Glass is a West Virginia treasure that spans generations. Nothing symbolizes the state of West Virginia better or more beautifully than Blenko Glass. We will discuss current and former craftsmen and designers and how important it is that Blenko and West Virginia glass be appreciated and valued by the younger generation.

Why Not Collect The Blenko Waterbottle?

Hillary:

One of the easiest things for new collectors to find in vintage hunting is the #384 Blenko water bottle. Many collectors bypass the water bottle, because it is so easily found. I collect it for that reason, and because it has been in the Blenko catalog since 1938, you can find it in nearly every color Blenko ever made. I have twenty one, in different colors, plus three etched bottles from the first three Blenko Collectors Society conventions. The first one I used as an autograph book at the first convention, and got as many designers’ signatures as I could.

I have found good quality vintage bottles for as little as $10, and paid as much as $75 on eBay for a vintage ruby bottle. Currently, Blenko has water bottles available in the following colors for $42 plus shipping: Crystal, Topaz, Tangerine, Cobalt, Clover, Spring Green, Electric Blue, Ocean Blue, and Seabreeze. Ruby is available for $56 plus shipping.

Happy Hunting!

Diane

Imaginary or Real Friends - The Bronze Look Begins Feb. 6

Looking for a special one of a kind item? Want to have a collection of glass like no other?

May I recommend The Bronze Look in Princeton, WV? Randolph and his team always have something new, daily they are on the phone, planning new and exciting events and glass or collectible shows or special edit on items.

If you remember The Bronze Look is doing the series of 4 bottles by Blenko. This is a limited edition bottom, and sold only at The Bronze Look.

Randolph tells me he has a few of the Autumn Bottle (#1 in this series), if you haven't placed an order, do so today.

Bronze Look also carries, Ron Hinkle (in my dreams I own a Hinkle lamp), Kelsey Murphy and Bronze Look carries a very large and exclusive collection of Fenton Glass!

Hilary:

We are having a six week running art show called "Imaginary or Real Friends". Some people refer to cameo glass as magical- fit for a King- and alluring. I think it is desirable art glass to have in any collection king or otherwise. Anyone that collects WV glass should have at least one cameo piece in their collection. The more layers of glass the more expensive. If you remember Pilgrim glass with Kelsey Murphy as the art director, they produced some of the prettiest pieces I have seen to date. Kesley is such a devoted artist to the art of cameo and I don't tnink there exists anyone with anymore skill or creativity. We have seen some really awesome pieces form her and Robert too.

Kelsey and her partner Robert are going to visit us on Feb 6. We are looking forward to the visit witha sneek peek the night before. Kelsey has been busy creating some new original pieces for us and Scott Fenton promised to send us some one-offs of her designs for the event.I am excited about this event as our gallery is finally finished with the wine cellar in the basement and all of the remodeling will be completed by their visit. On the sneek peek we will be having wine and cheese and a kitchen table discussion with Robert and Kelsey. I have a large marble table in the gallery where we sit around and enjoy the pieces with our friends

1985 Blenko WV Birthday

Tara,
Your black and white photo is of a 1985 Blenko Glass WV Birthday Vase by D Shepperd.
The 'strange mark' you mention is a staff and Don Shepperd used this as his signature.
The # 98 is the number of your vase - each year they are number #1 - ( years WV has been a State).
Paying $450 at a La. estate sale was in my opinion a good investment.
Perhaps you'll come June 20th 2010 (check back for exact times) to Milton for the 2010 addition to this 30 year tradition.

Photographing Blenko

HIllary: Here is another photo for the blog.
The vase in front is Blenko. The one in back is a stray. If anyone knows the origin, please let me know. I love blue and green together so this ice-bucket-looking piece came home with us. Red glass is hard to photograph (although not as difficult as purple); so, the blue/green piece was just what the doctor ordered to balance that STRONG red.

Items in the VC

We get 20 emails a week asking whats in the Visitor Center Gift Shop. We are 3+ hours away. So other than the items listed on the website, or when Kissin Kate is kind enough to send a photo of the gift shop we don't have a clue. We have written several times to ask Blenko Glass about photos and availability of items when response comes we immediately publish that response or the photos if photos are attached.
We are NOT an employee of Blenko Glass. Like you, we collect and admire Blenko Glass. We have no inside information. We don't get or give discounts, and we 'know nothing' most of the time.
We rely on the experienced, knowledgeable collectors who read and share their knowledge.
As always we will try to find answers to your questions, but do not assume we have the 'answers'.
While I don't like comments about management, production, quality etc. I will post as long as you can keep the comments positive. Our goal is to promote WV Glass, let us work together to create a glass collecting network
and not fight amongst ourselves or with others.

Thank you.
HJH

Today I did receive 2 emails from Blenko I'm publishing both.
This email is in response to a request to learn what might be available at the Gift Shop! Note no mention of price, or date these items might be available.

They are beautiful and you'll want to add this to your "Must Have" list for next year!

Mrs. Leonard - several people wrote to ask why I didn't suggest you go to ebay or visit local vintage shops.
I failed to make this suggestion. Please, do visit ebay and also vintage shops.
Shop with care and make certain the shopkeeper knows Blenko and is a honest person.

Joe Holland www.joehollandvw.com

Friends are relatives you make for yourself.
- Eustache Deschamps

The Joe Holland Volkswagen staff will quickly become your family! http://www.joehollandvw.com/

I've been a loyal customer since age 15, Mr. Herb of VW repair took care of my VW BUG (black diesel name Bond) for 4 +years. Then Mr. Herb retired and Kevin became my VW Service Guru. As a child I was impressed that no one talked 'down' to me. They explained what needed to be done to my Car and what my options were. My next car 2006 was also a VW BUG (a red convertible named Bella), Kevin and the very talented VW repair staff have taken exclusive car of my cars. I drove from Morgantown to South Charleston for repairs and regular checkups, and now I drive home from Columbus for oil changes and regular scheduled services.

Honestly, I just assumed all repair / service shops were like this. During my professional school (dental school) I heard horror stories about service departments and mistreatment of women, some classmates actually took guys from class with them to ensure they wouldn't be over charged. Only after this did I learn to fully appreciate the Joe Holland VW Service Department.

The ladies of Joe Holland Service supervised by Ms. Shirley Fritch answer the phone with a smile. They care about your service and they VALUE your time. You won't be left hanging or without an answer. The ladies are photographed below with a yellow waterbottle ( note the color - this is a very pretty yellow, unusual color) filled with Gerber daisies.
Quality Glass located in a high quality service department. At Joe Holland each and every person receives individualized care, excellent care!

Stephanie Dunlap, Shirley Fritsch, and Linda Starcher with Blenko Glass Collectors Waterbottle.

I failed to mention the Body and Paint shop at Joe Holland VW -

A deer hit Bella (photo), and the body shop straightened her hook and gave her new red paint. Excellent Body Shop! Very friendly also Very help and informative to the female client.

Freezing Cold Outside - Suggestions for Staying Warm.

http://www.westvirginiaski.com/, http://www.westvirginia.com/ (travel and recreation)

Other than my friends working at the West Virginia Ski sites, and those who ski each and every weekend. No one is loving this freezing weather.

Ms B loves snow, she plows through the snow with her nose, and dances in the snow. However, the frigid temperatures interfere with her enjoyment of this new snowfall.

How are you staying warm? If you have some free time today, why not drive to Milton, WV. Winter is a good time to visit Milton. The quaint little shops along the main highway all sell glass and other vintage goodies. Business after Christmas is usually slow . . . and they often mark down prices to attract shoppers.

At BlENKO GLASS http://www.blenkoglass.com/, a good number of new items are now being offered at the gift center with a price reduction. Remember to check out the clearance tables. Also pick up a couple water bottles to have in your gift closet. Blenko water bottles are the perfect under $50 gift for most any occasion.

If you don't own Blenko glass mugs, or drinking glasses purchase these also, nothing is nicer than having hot chocolate or a Bloody Mary in a Blenko container on a chilly morning.

Alice sent photos of the glass she received this holiday, no Blenko but many beautiful Made In the USA glass items, her son bought in New York. If you received glass Made In West Virginia consider sending photos and description to theblenkoproject@aol.com the blog.

Make this a great Wednesday!

Economy is overtaking Italy's artisans

A Reader sent in the following Associated Press article to share:

Four Venetian glassblowers perform a carefully orchestrated dance in front of a red-hot furnace, creating 60 gold-laced glass angels bound for a New York City retailer.
The choreography is enchanting, as one glassblower shapes the glass and hands off to another, who spins it until the angel's head sits atop the conical robe.
But an order of 60 barely keeps the furnaces burning.
Italy's traditional artisanal industries -- glass, leather, jewelry, furniture -- are under pressure from foreign competition and sometimes outmoded ways of doing business, one risk factor for an economy that needs more growth to convince markets it can handle its large debt burden in years ahead and avoid being drawn into Europe's debt crisis.
"I remember times when we had six months of orders. Now we have six days, " said Gianfranco Albertini, owner of the Vetrerie La Fenice.
In 2007, there were 1,200 glassblowers working on the Venetian island of Murano, according to the Promovetro consortium. Today, there are just 850, 30 percent fewer. And many of those are working limited hours.
A study by the industry group CNA showed bankruptcies in artisan firms are up 18 percent this year over 2009. The stagnation is emblematic of threats to Italy's economy.
Growth overall has stalled in the last decade to an average of 1.6 percent annual growth, not enough to eliminate questions about the country's ability to stay out of the turmoil that led to bailouts for Greece and Ireland. In decades past, Italy could let the lira fall to gain competitive export advantage -- but no more, now that it is in the euro.
And Premier Silvio Berlusconi's battle for his political survival -- his razor-thin victory in a vote of confidence this week foreshadows further turmoil ahead -- distracts from the need for longer-term reforms and policies that will relaunch the economy -- much less the historic Murano glassblowing trade.
Murano's expert glassblowers are purveyors of a thousand-year old tradition, artisans of the highest order. The vibrant patterns, sensual colors of the island's glass are unique in the world. And a good part of it -- from the spectacular glass chandeliers, gold-embossed glass fittings and bejeweled mirrors -- grace luxurious hotels, yachts and palaces the world over.
By the logic that promotes high-quality craftsmanship as a way to create growth and exports, the Murano glass industry should be thriving as high-end luxury sales take off again.
Its downfall hasn't been only cheap Chinese knockoffs that pass for Murano glass in markets around the world, and sometimes even in Venice itself, to the dismay of the glassmakers. But more insidiously, it has been hurt by a lack of innovation in the sector.
Looking ahead, it is innovation that will be key to improving growth and productivity to help Italy out of its mire, economists say.
"The country has stagnated for at least the last 10 years. We have an enormous public debt with no room for maneuvering in the budget. We have low productivity, and growth probably the lowest in Europe, " said Marco Annunziata, the London-based chief economic analyst at Unicredit. "And because of the global competition, the system is only going to get worse. We can't waste time."
The ratio of debt to annual economic output is about 118 percent, and is expected to peak at 120 percent in 2012, a heavy load especially compared to the 60 percent ceiling under EU rules. That enormous public debt, which largely funds retirement for Italy's aging population, leaves little room for budget maneuvering. Facing renewed austerity, everyone from university students to opera house workers and elementary school teachers are publicly protesting cuts in the faint hope they will win concessions when the government makes a budget adjustment later this month.
Still, Italy has escaped the debt crisis that has forced bailouts of Greece and Ireland, even if it has seen its borrowing costs raised, along with Spain and Portugal.
Analysts say its greater resilience is due to the low level of private debt, relatively sound banking system, a subdued deficit compared to other countries.
Italy won't return to vigorous growth -- the best vaccine against the contagion threat -- without modernizing its labor system to give employers more flexibility to confront shifting competitive patterns, Annunziata said. But unions have resisted work rule changes that might help Italy become more competitive and save jobs -- and allow workers to move from where they are less productive to more productive.
Now 74, Vetrerie La Fenice owner Albertini started working in the furnaces' melting glare at 10 and recalls the days when 6,000 plied a trade that holds little interest for young people today, who prefer less physically taxing and more economically secure jobs.
At its cavernous brick workshop, the youngest glassblower has 30 years of experience and they work in much the same way as their forebears hundreds of years ago.
Once the angel's robe and head are shaped, they pull molten glass into wings, two craftsmen each tugging them from opposite ends. Then they tap a molten ball into a halo, and fix it to the figurine. Each angel is laid gingerly in a tempering oven to prevent it cooling too quickly, and shattering.

Blenko Museum

Hilary, See attached photo. I uploaded this from the Blenko Museum website. Tell me where to find Blenko Glass like this? I collect cats, not Blenko, and I want these for my collection. I phoned Blenko and was told " we do not make cats and
as long as I've been here I haven't seen any cats."
Help!
Mi Mi Lenoard
Mrs. Lenoard,
Let me assure you Blenko did make Cats, the person you spoke with may have been either a new employee or a Holiday extra. The Blenko Cats, grow in popularity, rarity, and the price continues to soar. Buy these when available and quickly.
You didn't include an email address, so I'm going to respond here. A large number of people take photos from the Blenko Museum site and ask me where to purchase.
Every item photographed on the Blenko Museum web site is a perfect example, it will have no flaws, and the colors will be superior else they wouldn't photograph this item.
Finding vintage glass in perfect condition is a time consuming chore. My suggestion is to contact the Blenko Museum and ask if they might assist you in locating the items (cats) you desire.
In my six plus years of The Blenko Project I have found the Blenko Museum to be a source of accurate information, encouragement , and the photographs are the best.
Good luck. Write to theblenkoproject@aol.com if you need additonal contact info and also to send photos of the Blenko Cats you purchase. hjh

Designer - Bayliss

Hilary

Does Blenko have a designer? Who is the designer?

Harry B.

Harry,
Blenko's current designer is a design team
Bayliss Designs. We did a post about Bayliss in Oct 08 (check this out) we ask Blenko in 08 for contact information. When it arrives and if Bayliss is willing we'll offer information about this designer.
It is often said Bayliss' 07 and 08 birthday pieces are among the most beautiful in the 30 year series. As a collector of all things modern, his Bravo series attracts my attention. hjh

Blenko Myths and Legends. . .

Hillary

Last week at a glass meeting I heard a tall tale about a bakery in Milton the story was

each year this bakery does the Blenko Birthday Piece in 3 dimensional cake, and its better than the Cake Decorators who are on HGTV. Tell me its true. Dave C.

Dave,
The number of Blenko Myths/Legends continues to grow. The cake story is almost true. The cakes are a work of art, the lady who creates the cakes lives outside of Milton. We met her a few years ago, I wrote to Blenko Glass to ask if they would contact her for permission to publish her name and number as "the Baker " when the information and her permission arrives I'll add this info to the post. Each year in honor of West Virginia's Birthday and as a part of the WV Birthday Vase Sale the Blenko Glass Company host a reception on the 2nd floor - free cake, coke, coffee and sandwiches. June 20th is a big celebration for West Virginians, for Blenko Collectors its a special time. The Blenko Family is always available on June 20th each year to sign any Blenko item purchased.
Dave, perhaps someone else will have other photos, these two were left in a folder from 08. While the cake isn't 3 dimensional, it is, each year an exact replica of the Blenko Glass WV Birthday Vase.
Dave, thank you for reading Heart of Glass. If you haven't been to WV and Milton on June 20th let me invite you to attend June 20th 2010!

Happy New Year - 2010

On this 2ndst day of 2010. I'll repeat the first post to this blog. Little has changed,
. Other than I've grown older, the # of years I've been involved in The Blenko Project is now 6. The Heart of Glass Blog is now a toddler - not changed is Your committment to Blenko Glass, your willingness to purchase high quality, made in the USA glass and our desire to continue learning, while being supportive of other collectors. Thank you for your comments, your photos, your articles and for Buying Blenko and WV GLass. hjh

I Heart Blenko - This was the first post to Heart of Glass - Today we are posting # 1,673.

This blog will focus on the Blenko Glass Company located in Milton, West Virginia. Twice weekly I'll post on Blenko and WV Glass topics, once a month the post will feature an employee or designer from the present or past. Biweekly I'll post photos of individual Blenko made items, and items that are currently available from Blenko. We will offer some background information on the piece and perhaps the steps/ process used to make the item. I am NOT a fine arts major, a glass expert or an English/Journalism major. I don't have all the glass answers. I am inquisitive, don't mind asking people for answers - I believe in lifelong learning. This blog will I hope be a place where we can learn together. If you have been to the Blenko Factory, or are a retired or former glass worker or just have photos of unusual Blenko and / or Blenko stories to share - this is the place - I'd love to see/hear them. For the last 2 years I have spent all my free time traveling to meet former Blenko and other glass workers and designers. I want to learn more about Blenko and W. Va. made glass. . . and I want YOU to THINK before buy glass...who made the glass. The number of glass factories in the US has declined by almost 72% in the last 15 years.Together we can stop this trend. Be an advocate for MADE IN WV.Blenko Glass Factory is located in Milton, W.Va., less than 20 minutes from Huntington, W. Va.

It's A Good Day To Be A Mountaineer!

Some time ago Pat White stated: "It's a Good Day To Be A Mountaineer! "
Always a good day to be a West Virginian. We have much to be proud of.

Today West Virginia University WVU http://www.wvu.edu/. plays THE GATOR BOWL. A good number of pre and post parties will be include the Blenko waterbottle with flowers or a beverage. When West Virginians have pre and post game parties - having Blenko Glass logo items is essential.
We're believing WVU will win the GATOR BOWL. This maybe the first Gator Bowl my family has missed - but we'll be setting in front of the TV with our snacks in WVU Logo items.
Cheering Let's GO O O O Mountaineers! It would be terrific . . . awesome to have two BOWL WINNERS! But, ya know its very nice having two universities in our state invited to Bowls! BE PROUD TO BE A WEST VIRGINIAN!

Marshall University www.marshall.edu Just won the LITTLE CAESARS PIZZA BOWL! You might ask did The Marshall University -Blenko Logo items assist? http://www.blenkoglass.com/

Note: Photo of Blenko Punch bowl set from a Georgia collector, we received 2 dozen + emails asking where to purchase this. This set is beautiful, and on my wish list. Like Bruce and Deb of Texas, if I had the punch bowl I'd be forced to host parties with cookies and punch. Delightful Blast from the Past!

Blenko Stopper Repairs

Hillary:
I promised you before and after photos, and here they are. The 6734 decanter in plum was purchased in 2004. I don’t recall what I paid for it, but I did get a discount on it as the stopper was badly chipped. Though the stopper was very poorly repaired, most of the pieces were present. Because most of the original glass was there, Wayne Montano was able to reform it out of the original plum glass. The 6418 decanter in olive green was purchased earlier this year. I ended up paying about $85 for it, again because of the damage to the stopper. In this case, there was a lot of glass missing. Wayne cut off the damaged portion, and added clear glass to reshape the base of the stopper. When repairing something like this, he needs both the stopper and the bottle. When he is reshaping the stopper it will be seated properly in the decanter so that it will display as intended.
Montano has repaired glass for years, and has done work on various pieces of my mother’s collection, as well as my Blenko pieces. If you are considering purchasing a less than perfect piece of Blenko, consider including the price of repair in the total. Check their website: http://www.montanosglassrepair.com/ to see if they will be at a show, or an antique shop near you. You can drop off your glass, get an estimate of the repair cost, and what it will entail. Wayne will not overcharge you, and will deliver quality work.

It Was The Night Before Christmas . . . .

Each year on the 24th my parents and I share a Christmas tradition that include: last minute shopping then home to new pajamas and robe for each of us, snacking on finger foods, watching a Christmas movie, my Dad will then read the classic childrens story 'Tis Was The Night Before Christmas."

The time is 12:00 Christmas Eve we finished the last minute shopping, and on our way home, actually 2 blocks from our home , w h e n we were involved in a car crash. Someone slowed to turn left on to Beach, as a car suddenly& quickly drove down Edgewood Drive and drive #1 had to stop, then driver #2 a van applied breaks and driver #3 applied breaks - all in all three cars were damaged. My Dad's 2008 Benz a Holiday gift from a year or so ago was badly damaged - the Benz just crumpled, my Dad couldn't open his door, fluids were coming from the car by what seemed like buckets. My Dad who is 60+ had never been involved in an accident before this, not even a fender bender. He was just 'in shock', my Mom and I veterans of accidents were a little more calm, this one happen so quickly, we were going less than 25 miles per hour and the car crumpled.

The good news is other than having my glasses broken, and a scratch between the eyes. NO ONE was hurt. Everyone kept cool, no one was happy to have this be their Christmas Eve, but all three drivers and the passengers were pleasant to one another.

As our car was being towed away - - - - My Mom was dialing the phone for help, I learned even the Airport Car Rental Stores close at noon on Xmas eve? My Mom then called our State Farm Agents office to report the accident and was told by Marylin (an office worker) to call back after 5pm and the voice mail would take her directly to State Farm 800 number, she (Marylin) didn't know the number! The time was 12:15! We later found humor in the State Farm office workers response, h o w e v e r, I doubt that I'll be a lifelong State Farm customer. My parents have been insured by State Farm Insurance for almost 35 years ( car accident free), the response to this accident from Marylin or lack of response . . . well . . . .I expect either to be connected to an 800 number or to have the 'person' respond with some compassion & or information.

Several hours later as my Dad read our Christmas Story . . . . I thought about the people without electric power, my Mingo County family who has been without electricity for 9 days, the homeless, the unemployed, the soldiers away from home, those without family or faith.

Today let us all rejoice in the reason for the season, and be compassionate, giving and kind to everyone. Wait, can we try this for the entire year of 2010? Let us resolve to be patient, compasionate, giving and kind to everyone.

A Late "Merry Christmas To You And Your Family!"
