Heart of Glass - Blenko Glass

Blenko Glass is a West Virginia treasure that spans generations. Nothing symbolizes the state of West Virginia better or more beautifully than Blenko Glass. We will discuss current and former craftsmen and designers and how important it is that Blenko and West Virginia glass be appreciated and valued by the younger generation.

Blenko Holiday Sale -

Hillary We were in Milton last week our goal was a) to spend the childrens inheritance on West Virginia Glass, and b) to stop at the factory to purchase christmas gifts. We were disappointed in both endevors. We discovered not much is available. At the factory the colors were not ones we recognized but seemed more garish. The technique of old seems to be lost. The shop had little to offer, I saw none of the lamps you promised and the lamp I did view was a hot orange color. May I respectfully suggest you publish photos of current items. Or if you haven't been to Blenko in the last year or go, visit you will be surprised by the change we were. Timothy S.

Tim
Blenko is a small family owned factory. The craftsmen at Blenko glass have great skill and are creative. It is impossible to have the shelves full daily - sales are brisk at the Visitors Center. May I suggest you order on line, or phone 304 743 9081 to inquire about availability of items you desire.
Blenko is known for 'color' they often experiment with colors and add new ones yearly. Perhaps the color you saw was a 2nd (the Visitor Center receives 2nd frequently), or from a batch that wasn't correct thus it was sold at the VC.
I have been to Blenko in the last year. My views are different. I saw the freshly cleaned Fence of Glass designed by Joel Myers, I saw new fencing around the beautiful lake, and a very clean and polish gift shop with full shelves.

Blenko is getting ready for the Holidays! The Holiday sale is this month.

You neglected to mention where you are located. Consider returning for the Holiday Sale. I guarantee you the shelves will be filled. If this is impossible, use on line ordering, OR phone Blenko and speak with one of the knowledgeable ladies on staff at Blenko. They will help you.
You also mentioned 'technique' the techniques used at Blenko are old, well established techniques with an occassional tweat or alteration. The Harvey Littelton quote about technique is a better response to your statement than anything I might state.

Blenko http://www.blenkoglass.com/ the last remaining manufacture of antique glass in the USA. Blenko Glass where you buy handmade items and everything in the shop was made in the USA.
Hillary
“technique is cheap.” All I meant by that is that technique is available to everybody, that you can read the technique, if you have any background. technique in and of itself is nothing. But technique in the hands of a strong, creative person, like Voulkos or Dante Marioni, takes on another dimension. And it’s that other dimension that is the product of our educational system, of our uniquely American freedoms, and so on.

Hinkle Glassworks - Buckhannon, WV

Readers: A few weeks ago Pete wrote to ask
'what to do in WV - where to go?' Your response has been overwhelming.
Blog friend Joe Cantees sent profiles of 5 glass shops in West Virginia.

I'll publish them as blog time becomes available.

This one - Hinkle's Glassworks is definitely my favorite, I've had my eye on a Hinkle Lamp for more than 2 years. Visit the website, then make plans to visit Hinkle's studio.

Blenko Glass - Don't let Paraskevidekatriaphobia - Keep Your From Shopping Blenko!

www.blenkoglass.com Blenko Glass in Milton is OPEN and many shelves have reduced prices - don't let parakevidekatriaphobia keep you home. Enjoy the day and the great savings at BLENKO GLASS. 304 743 9081.
INFORMATION BELOW FROM WEBMASTER STEVE of www.blenkoproject.org and was taken directly from web info.
Friday the 13th occurs when the thirteenth day of a month falls on Friday, which superstition holds to be a day of good or bad luck. In the Gregorian calendar, this day occurs at least once, but at most three times a year. Any month's 13th day will fall on a Friday if the month starts on a Sunday. In 2009 this applies to the months of February, March, and November. The next year to have three Friday the 13th dates will be 2015.
The fear of Friday the 13th is called paraskevidekatriaphobia, a word derived from the concatenation of the Greek words Paraskeví (Παρασκευή) (meaning Friday), and dekatreís (δεκατρείς) (meaning thirteen), attached to phobía (φοβία) (meaning fear). The term triskaidekaphobia derives from the Greek words "tris", meaning 'three', "kai", meaning 'and', and "deka", meaning 'ten'. the whole word means three and ten. The word was derived in 1911 and first appeared in a mainstream source in 1953.

Les Womack - Mr. Blenko Glass - Maker of Angels and Snowmen

Les Womack - Making Angels and Snowmen!

If you haven't started a Les Womack collection - plan to do so this season. Les Womack returns to Blenko Glass yearly for the Holiday Sale.

These photos were taken by Christy of Blenko Glass. Shown here is the 20 steps to making a handcrafted angel, very time consuming. Technique and skill are required.

Les Womack is one of if not my favorite Blenko Glass Retired Foreman. Les is a tall muscular man in the 2nd half of his life.
He looks 20 years younger than his stated age. He's been married to the love of his life Jenny for more than 45 years. They have one child Christy - yes, Christy from Blenko Glass. The entire Womack family - Les (foreman) Chirsty (office manager) Jenny (book keeper/secretary) worked with Blenko. Blenko Glass has many family units, cousins, sons, grandsons (Shorty Finley's grandson is a current employee). Blenko Glass is a small factory located in Milton,WV. Most past and present Blenko Glass employees will tell you they also belong to the 'Blenko Family.'
Les Womack returns each year to make ANGELS and SNOWMEN for the Holiday Sale at Blenko Glass. He's there today and most every day from now until Dec 18th making Angel and Snowmen. Yet, Somehow there are never enough Angels or Snowmen! These little glass figures sell out very quickly each and every day!
Should you want one - I suggest phoning Blenko Glass or going on line today to order. Maybe a pre order. I can't guarantee they will be in stock. BUT you'll receive the Angel or Snowman within 7 days. Problem with this. Phone 304 743 9081 and ask for Chirsty ( this is what I do for most all orders - but don't tell anyone we don't want her to be distracted from her real job).
If you want to see the Snowman and Angels being made go to the Blenko Glass website and check the calendar or phone.
Visiting the Blenko Glass on demonstration of glassmaking or observation days -should be a quarterly event for all WV families.
Take the children, the granchildren or your neighbors children to Blenko Glass during the School Holiday break.

At Heart of Glass we'll be working in Clinic on Veterans Day - but if you have the day off - join a parade or volunteer on this day in Honor of Those Who Have Served and Are Serving Our Country.
The following info about Veterans Day is from webmaster Steve.
Veterans Day is an annual American holiday honoring military veterans. Both a federal holiday and a state holiday in all states, it is usually observed on November 11. However, if it occurs on a Sunday then the following Monday is designated for holiday leave, and if it occurs Saturday then either Saturday or Friday may be so designated.] It is also celebrated as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in other parts of the world, falling on November 11, the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. (Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice.)
The holiday is commonly printed as Veteran's Day or Veterans' Day in calendars and advertisements. While these spellings are grammatically acceptable, the United States government has declared that the attributive (no apostrophe) rather than the possessive case is the official spelling

Hello,
a recent post asked for ID help with what was thought to be a Blenko Rialto piece. I think Bruce's analysis is correct. Its possible that the piece is Rialto but the Blenko etch on the base would help. The stopper should be ruby and shaped like the stopper in the picture I've enclosed. This picture is a ruby 6127 vase with stopper. It was often sold with the Regal series but is not listed in the catalog as such. Hope this helps.

Patience!

" How can a society that exists on instant mash potatoes, instant cake mixes, frozen dinners, and instant cameras teach its children about patience?"

Do you have a Glass Collecting Patience story to share?

My friend Larry from Serenity Glass of Texas often suggest having patience is the key to a great glass collection. Personally patience is a virtue I'm developing.
http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/91373.Paul_Sweeney Paul Sweeney - Financial Advisor / and one of my favorite authors had this to say about Patience.
How can a society that exists on instant mashed potatoes, packaged cake mixes, frozen dinners, and instant cameras teach patience to its young? ~Paul Sweeney

Reader Larry Thompson (son of Blenko Glass Craftsman Harry Thompson has both a great glass collection and Patience. Red his note - 10 years he waits for the appropriate stopper!

DR. Hillary , We purchased a 7054 in the early 70s and it got broken after we had it about 10 years, the stopper was undamaged so we had been looking for an other bottle for many years. When we saw this one on eBay with out a stopper we jumped on it . I need to do a little fitting on the stopper to make an ideal fit. Thanks Larry T.

NO Pre -ORDERS on Les Womack Series (limited to 50)

NO PRE ORDERS. Morning after the Holiday Sale you may phone order. I apologize for misleading you. Now my recommendation is: IF you can't come to Blenko for the Holiday Sale - PHONE the next morning to order.

Les Womack - Holiday Limited Editon Blenko Glass

We just received this bit of news RE: BLENKO GLASS HOLIDAY SALE!

If you read the blog - you know we're big fans of retired Blenko Glass foreman LES WOMACK. We owe several of his angels and snowmen, I keep the angels on display all year long.

Mr. Womack returns to Blenko yearly to produce Blenko Angels and Snowmen. This year Les Womack will produce limited editions items. You'll want to pre order (304 743 9081 with your credit card) to assure you are one of the lucky 50 people.
http://www.pfcps.com/ PFC gift cards. My blog friend Chris http://not-my.blogspot.com/ recommends using the PFC gift cards for all your holiday purchases. Heart of Glass recommends you pay with cash or check. Increasing your debt to buy gifts is never good.
The best gift is the gift of your time - take the children, the grandchildren, the neighbors kids and drive down to Blenko Glass - the observation deck is open (check website for dates and times) and its free! Wonderful way to spend a morning. hjh

The following info is from Christy of Blenko - Christy is Les' daughter.

"Dad will have 2 pieces showcased this year. A very pretty, petite ruffle basket called "First Snow" It has blue and white swirls running through the body and a special angel we are calling the "Christmas Angel" which has all the colors of Christmas in her body, red, white, and green with a bit of sparkle. Dad will sign each piece, and they are limited to 50 each production. All numbered on the bottom."

I'll publish photos when they arrive.

Sent the following information photo and note.

Last year I purchased a dozen glass necklaces up in Weston, a place called Applacahin Glass. Daily they make the glass while you watch. One or two men, both retired from Louie Glass. This and the WV Glass Museum made the trip to Weston one I do yearly. I bought these for the women in my prayer group. The cost was minimal. Chip told me he can made special designs upon request if you order more than a dozen.
