A new designer will be creating this 2017 WVa Birthday Vase.

If you do not collect the WVA Birthday Vase.  May I suggest you start collecting.

Very few people have the entire collection - it started in 1980.  
Start with this new designer 2017  and collect from this point forward.

We now of 10 complete collections.

We will be posting photos of 14 early Blenko WVA Birthday Vases belonging to an estate.
These are for sale,  the prices range from 1200 to 550.
So not cheap but if you need only one or two to complete - perhaps worth the investment.

This Bday vase is difficult to find in good condition.  It is  very large and often chipped.

ACCLAIMED ARTISTS TO CHRYSLER MUSEUM OF ART IN JUNE— The 46^th Annual Glass Art Society Conference invites public to enjoy demonstrations, gallery hop and more —

March 13, 2017 - The Chrysler Museum of Art and the Perry Glass Studio will host the 46th Annual Glass Art Society (GAS) conference from June 1–3, welcoming international leaders in the contemporary glass community to Hampton Roads for a weekend of innovative performances.
The 2017 conference, “Reflections from the Edge: Glass, Art, and Performance,” invites attendees to experience technical glass demonstrations; lectures on science and art; regionwide exhibitions; and special events. Several events are open to the public, including free demonstrations on the pre-conference Day of Glass, a gallery hop in the NEON Arts District, the Goblet Grab, an International Student Exhibition and live and silent auctions.
The conference features presentations from industry leaders in a variety of glass disciplines, including demonstrations of new techniques in hot glass, coldworking and flameworking.
Artist Mark Dion will deliver the keynote address, “Adventures in the Culture of Nature,” on Thursday, June 1. Dion’s work explores the ways in which public institutions and dominant ideologies shape understanding of history, knowledge and the natural world. His work is held in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Museum of Modern Art in New York, Tate Gallery in London and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, among others. He is a mentor at Columbia University in New York and co-director of Mildred’s Lane, an innovative art education and residency program in Beach Lake, Pa.
Two artists will be recognized for their outstanding contributions to the development of glass worldwide. Joyce J. Scott will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award for Exceptional Achievement and Contributions to the Studio Glass Field. Scott constructs sophisticated bead sculptures incorporating glass, clay, fabric and found objects that address social topics, including racism, violence and gender inequality. In her home city of Baltimore, Scott is an active leader promoting creative spaces for the community. In 2016, she received a prestigious MacArthur Foundation “Genius Award,” a five-year grant intended to provide recipients with flexibility to pursue their work.
Wayne Strattman will receive the Honorary Lifetime Membership Award for Outstanding Service to the Glass Art Society. Strattman is the owner of the Boston-based Strattman Design, a world leader in building museum displays, custom sculpture and innovative lighting products. Through his involvement in GAS, he initiated and endowed the Strattman Critical Dialogue Lecture Series, co-funded the Technology Advancing Glass (TAG) grant program and started and helped to maintain neon exhibitions at GAS conferences since 1997.
The Chrysler Museum of Art’s glass collection is encyclopedic, containing more than 10,000 works from every era of glassmaking. In 2011, the Museum opened its Glass Studio, which quickly earned acclaim for its monthly Third Thursday theatrical glass performances. The Museum’s selection as host of the 2017 conference further cements the Chrysler’s reputation as a destination for artists and patrons. The Chrysler Museum was selected after an international competition for the honor of hosting the conference. It also marks a return to the region where the country’s first glassmaking took place in Jamestown.
The 2017 GAS conference is co-chaired by Diane Wright, the Carolyn and Richard Barry Curator of Glass; Charlotte Potter, Manager and Programming Director of the Perry Glass Studio; and community volunteers Virginia Hitch and Colin McKinnon. ABOUT THE CHRYSLER MUSEUM OF ART

The recently expanded Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, Virginia, is one of America’s most distinguished mid-sized art museums, with a nationally recognized collection of more than 30,000 objects, including one of the great glass collections in America. The core of this collection was given to the Museum by Walter P. Chrysler, Jr., an avid art collector who donated thousands of objects from his private collection to the Museum in 1971. In the years since Chrysler’s death in 1988, the Museum has dramatically extended its campus and developed new ties with the Norfolk community. It now has rapidly growing collections, especially in American art, photography, and contemporary art, including glass. The Chrysler also mounts an ambitious schedule of visiting exhibitions and educational programs and events each season.

Marvin Liposfsky . Blenko Glass.

Can you tell me about the link between Marvin Liposky and Blenko?  I attended a Glass Group here in Greensboro and the Gentleman said Liposky and other Glass Giants visited Blenko and other Glass factories in the 70s.  I can find no information about these collaborations.
Was there glass made for sale?  If so where do I find these items?    John G.

John,   Your lecturer was correct.  Joel Myers ( Blenko Designer)  was instrumental in inviting other glass artist to  experience working with factory glass.  These men later became the foundation of the early Glass Arts Movement.  Marvin L.,  Henry Littleton,  Fritz D.  and several other glass artist/ teachers visited factories in W.Va.  Marvin L. would go on to found the GAS.

September 1, 1938 — January 15, 2016

Marvin Lipofsky, 77, renowned San Francisco Bay Area teacher and sculptor who worked with glass, died of natural causes on Friday, January 15, 2016. Mr. Lipofsky was born and raised in Barrington, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, where his parents Henry and Mildred Lipofsky owned a small department store. He earned his BFA in Industrial Design, 1957-1962 at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, followed by an MS and MFA in Sculpture, 1962-1964, University of Wisconsin, Madison.
Mr. Lipofsky was among the first students to work with Harvey Littleton, the celebrated founder of the American Studio Glass movement, at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Immediately upon graduation, he was hired by the University of California, Berkeley to build and direct its glass program, where he taught until 1972. Teaching full-time, he developed the glass program at the California College of Arts and Crafts (now the California College of the Arts) in Oakland where he remained until 1987, when he left to work full time in his studio in Berkeley until his death.
In addition to his daughter Lisa Lipofsky-Valenzuela, Mr. Lipofsky is survived by his grandchildren, Briana & Antonio, his sister Barbara Marsh, and his good friend, Jeanette Bokhour.
Mr. Lipofsky's work was prized for its rhythmic forms and complex concave and convex shapes, which suggested both abstract and organic sources. Glass was his chosen medium of artistic expression. A consummate colorist, and fine artist, Mr. Lipofsky took great advantage of the chromatic possibilities of working with hot glass. He was dedicated to honoring the artists who worked with him and the places where he made his work.
Celebrated for his working method, Mr. Lipofsky regularly traveled to glass workshops around the USA and the world (he visited 30 foreign countries, including Bulgaria, China, Israel, New Zealand, the Soviet Union, and from coast to coast in the USA; he taught over 300 workshops around the world), where he gathered the raw material for his pieces, worked with local sculptors and their students in their hot shops, observed local communities and traditions, and then returned to Berkeley to assemble his final objects. Mr. Lipofsky functioned as an ambassador for sculpture in glass, often naming the groups of works that resulted from his voyage for their place of origin, for example, the Stockholm Series (1989) and the Kentucky Series (2000).
Mr. Lipofsky's work was widely exhibited and collected. It is included in the permanent collections of the Corning Museum of Glass, the Museum of Art and Design in New York, the Oakland Museum of California, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the St. Louis Museum of Art, the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Renwick Gallery (National Museum of American Art) Smithsonian Institution at Washington, D.C., and the Musée des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, among many others. The recipient of a Lifetime Achievement award from the Glass Art Society in 2009, he was also the subject of a retrospective exhibition at the Oakland Museum of California in 2003. A founding member of the American Studio Glass movement, he was the most influential glass artist in California. Marvin Lipofsky was a formidable character and leader in the close knit community of glass artists and collectors, within the USA and internationally. He will be greatly missed.

Saint Patrick's Day, or the Feast of Saint Patrick (Irish: Lá Fhéile Pádraig, "the Day of the Festival of Patrick"), is a cultural and religious celebration held on 17 March, the traditional death date of Saint Patrick  (c. AD 385–461), the foremost patron saint  of Ireland.

Saint Patrick's Day was made an official Christian feast day in the early 17th century and is observed by the Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion (especially the Church of Ireland), the Eastern Orthodox Church, and the Lutheran Church. The day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, and celebrates the heritage and culture , of the Irish  in general. Celebrations generally involve public parades and festivals, céilithe, and the wearing of green attire or shamrocks.^[ Christians also attend church services and the Lenten restrictions on eating and drinking alcohol are lifted for the day, which has encouraged and propagated the holiday's tradition of alcohol consumption.

 Modern celebrations have been greatly influenced by those of the Irish diaspora,, particularly those that developed in North America. In recent years, there has been criticism of Saint Patrick's Day celebrations for having become too commercialised and for fostering negative stereotypes of the Irish.

   In West Virginia we often give 'green' gifts to those we care for - flowers, mints, or GREEN GLASS,  and most pubs offer green colored beers for the celebration.

As a child one of my favorite stories was about a slow and reliable turtle.
We had at one time about 15 Blenko Glass turtle in my Dad's small garden in Edgewood - they were located throughout the garden with many near the small koi pond.

The OWL is said to be a symbol of wisdom - so perhaps a gift for teacher or mentor.

Recently a major circus retired there elephants.   Going to the circus and seeing elephants almost yearly is one of my childhood memories.  Elephants fascinate children.  Blenko has created the Elephant in a large selection of colors.  UNDER $20.

If you've visited Blenko Glass Factory, you know the place is filled with critters.  Blenko Glass sits on a beautiful lot - large lot with a lake, a glass garden,  more ducks, geese and cats than your child can count.

Sea Turtle Discs

Our recent addition to the Blenko line of animals is this swimming sea turtle with small fish swimming near him. Available as a non-drilled item or as a hand-drilled item to create a hole for hanging. As a sun catcher or window ornament these are striking. As a flat desk ornament they are fun as well.  They can even serve as a beach themed tree ornament. 2.5” to 3.5” in diameter. Each is different due to the handmade process.

Valentine's & Chocolate Lovers WeekendFebruary 11, 2017

Held in our Visitor Center/ gift shop this event includes special made red and pink glass object for your special someone.  Walter Blenko will be on site to sign our glass for you and we provide complimentary Pretty-in-pink cupcakes and steamy hot chocolate. Saturday and Sunday we offer limited production pieces with Valentines colors and themes.
