On June 20, 1863 West Virginia was incorporated as the 35th state of the union and to commemorate this historic day Blenko Glass has designed 155 limited and stunning pieces to be sold to the public on a first come first serve basis (Limit one per person. NO advance orders. NO phone orders).
This year's birthday piece will go on sale Saturday, June 16. The doors will open at 8am, get in line early so you don't miss your chance to own one of these rare and beautiful pieces!. Each piece will be numbered and signed by Blenko President, Walter Blenko Jr. as well as Designers, Emma Walters & Andrew Shaffer. During the celebration we will have West Virginia Day birthday cake and refreshments for all to enjoy (while supplies last) and Walter Blenko Jr. will be available to sign additional glass purchases. Blenko’s 2018 WV Birthday piece stands tall like our mountains. Over 22” in height, our newest Birthday piece celebrates the Mountain State.
Designers Emma Walters and Andrew Shaffer have designed a spire-like bottle form reflecting the strength of our state’s mountains and our people. Like our state, each piece is the product of many hands, many people.
The piece proclaims and celebrates the efforts of many to bring to reality the creation of a single object. Many hands at Blenko work to create each piece. Like our state, the decanter-bottle has many ‘facets’ that join to make the whole.
The striking colors of Blenko glass found in the WV piece, represent West Virginia’s heartland. Captured in the glass is every hill and holler, from our cool waters to the bountiful forest carpet beneath endless skies. Here is a moment within the West Virginia hills and mountains captured in handmade glass.
Each object has a subtle wood texture intended to residually imprint our enduring natural resource, the West Virginia hardwood forest. The native Appalachian cherry hardwood, or “Timber”, we have used to create this piece will burn a little more with each glass piece created. Left behind is our hand-formed, mouth blown glass what will, like our traditions and culture, live on for generations to come.
