Heart of Glass - Blenko Glass

Blenko Glass is a West Virginia treasure that spans generations. Nothing symbolizes the state of West Virginia better or more beautifully than Blenko Glass. We will discuss current and former craftsmen and designers and how important it is that Blenko and West Virginia glass be appreciated and valued by the younger generation.

I Get By - With A Little Help From My Friends

When the Beatles sang "I get by with a little help from my friends" at Woodstock in 1969 they couldn't have known about Heart of Glass.

When I started the Heart of Glass - I envisioned a place where 'glass lovers' would communicate - chat - send their photos, write post, exchange information, and in general it would be a blog of glass lovers not Hillary's blog. As I knew my schedule & my knowledge would never allow for full time daily blog. But I envisioned " A place where I could get by with help from my glass friends!"

Some days - When Wayne Husted, Marvin L., Henry H. Joel M, Mr. Hunt, Matt C, * or other (for me) Totally Awesome Famous Glass Person - either answers my question or helps with a question or add information - It is such a feeling of Bliss! Combine this with the energy the glass community - each of you - puts into making this blog work! We remain one of the top blogs at the Huntington Herald- because of your work!
Glass Art is alive and well, the collecting of Glass Art will continue for ever! Heart of Glass appreciates each and every one of you. . . . your photos, your comments, your time! Together we can revive interest in Blenko Glass collecting and West Virginia Glass Collecting!
Support the Glass Arts!
* Today I'm a name dropper!
I mentioned the artist - but also collectors - from West Virginia and TEXAS and California who freely send there photos. We welcome photos and stories from everyone. Please share your photos and BLenko OR WEST VIRGINIA Glass stories with us. Thank you all when I count my blessings, I count each of you twice.

Hi Hillary,
I am forwarding the following photo for two reasons. First in appreciation to Wayne Husted for his correcting my error on the '61-'62 Charcoal mixup. I had honestly never noticed that Charcoal was listed in the Pina '62 reference book until he corrected my misstatement about the possibility of the 6210 decanter not supposedly made in charcoal. The second reason is to share about finding the 638M in a local Antique Mini Mall in one of surrounding communities. I had just about given up looking for the day when I made myself look up and there sitting on the top shelf was this pristine 638M in Jonquil crackle. At only $14.00 I felt like I had pulled a gun on the cashier in order to leave the store with this treasure. This was the second 638M for me as I have one also in Turquoise. I found the body in a local store and then a week later stumbled across the stopper in an antique store a hundred miles away while visiting Debbie's mother in Sherman, Texas. Total cost was about the same. The other decanter is of coarse the "Gumps" decanter, also in Jonquil. I recently found this on Ebay and this leaves us with only the "Peacock" piece to complete our set.
Enjoy,
Bruce Specht
Note: Blogger is on automtic (written 7 -8 in advance ) post, I'll break the cycle anytime there is NEW News about Blenko!

READ THIS ON ANOTHER BLOG
SAD NEWS:So, now we need to add Blenko to the following list of venerable companies that have either closed or will likely close:
Waterford, Wedgwood, Rosenthal, Royal Worcester, Spode, Lenox, De Simone, Poole (closed 2006) and now Blenko.
And this is only the first month of 2009.

Chitra,

Gump's of San Francisco is still in business although I don't know if they carry any of the Blenko line or not (didn't see any on their website gumps.com). The piece shown by Bruce S. is one of a collection done specially for Gump back in the 1960's. Occasionally, one will appear on EBay and we have seen one or two at estate sales. Hard to find and, of course, highly collectible!
BTY, great photo Bruce!

We all get by with help from friends and the gods.
The name Blenko will not soon be forgotten.
