Heart of Glass - Blenko Glass

Blenko Glass is a West Virginia treasure that spans generations. Nothing symbolizes the state of West Virginia better or more beautifully than Blenko Glass. We will discuss current and former craftsmen and designers and how important it is that Blenko and West Virginia glass be appreciated and valued by the younger generation.

What Can We Do To Help ?

The question I am ask most often in emails is What can we do to help?
I posed this question to Blenko and if they reply with suggestions I'll post them here. In the mean time . . . .
Have you written or phone the offices of Govenor Manchin? Senators? State Legislators?
If not, do so today! Remember to look before you purchase and whenever possible buy local, buy made in USA always.
Teachers*: Your students enjoyed field trips to Blenko why not write Class Letters to the Govenor and Senators in support of Blenko? * This wasn't my idea but a teacher from Ohio County suggested she was having her class write and perhaps other should also.
Support BLENKO GLASS, not just with your purchases but with your letters, and phone calls to our government officials.
We can't stand idly by and allow these Men, the Men of Blenko Glass, to leave our community.
BLENKO GLASS is a West Virginia Company, these men and women are your neighbors.
The #2 question most ask in my email is about the value of glass, and should you sell or hold on to your glass.
Let me begin this by saying I'm a 4th year (DDS) Dental Student in my 20s not a glass art or investment expert. I gifted to WVU my Blenko Glass collection 16 months ago in an effort to have Blenko Glass seen by the thousands of parents and students visiting the WVU campus.
It is my belief that long term BLENKO GLASS will never go down in value, that you should always buy only the glass you love and want to live with. I remain hopeful that BLENKO GLASS will remain a part of Milton and West Virginia. While this is a very bleak time, I have not given up hope.
The #3 questions is the Blenko Collectors.
I don't have new information - but when new information is on their website I'll publish the info, and you can ask to be put on their mailing list also. My recommendation is to join the Collectors Club, to learn more about Blenko Glass and to be with others who enjoy collecting and learning about WV Glass.

Milton West Virginia and Blenko Glass were an important part of my growing up, as a litle girl my Dad and I would go almost every week to Milton for Blenko Glass then lunch . Over the years I've watched the road become wider, the new, beautiful Welcome To Milton display by the Master Gardeners and many other changes. It seems Stewarts Hot Dog Stand , the antique stores and Blenko remain unchanged. Milton is the kind of town, other people can only dream about or see on television, a small town, where people meet at Granny K's or the VFW to solve the worlds problems and everyone knows everyone else and is willing to help a neighbor . Visiting Milton and Blenko Glass. Spending time with glass workers & artist, and attempting to do arts helped to shape the person I am, a person who values family, hard work, beauty, honesty, who trys to remain positive, and to see the good in the world.
The next generation deserves to have the privilege of experiencing BLENKO GLASS and learning about Milton, WV also.
Have you ever seen the look on a child's face the first time they see glass being made at Blenko? It is priceless.

Amen Annu,
We had viewed PBS Blenko prior to discovering Hillary's blog but had never visited Blenko or Milton.
We now stay in Barboursville or Hurricane, I prefer Hurricane or Winfield and spend 3 day weekend just being glasshounds frequently.
This place is all that she says and more.
Quiet, all that New Hampsire and Conn and Rhode Island have to offer at l/2 the price with l/2 the population. Undiscovered tourist attration.
Blenko Glass if this is the end, will be missed. Friends bought a van load of glass for me and took videos this week, not the same as being there.
Another question for you Hillary will the blog continue?
Also I notice you are limiting the comments, most of mine never make it to the blog, may I ask why?

Has Blenko ask anyone for assistance? I was told last week they have not.
If they have not, then our writing will fail.
Find the answer to this please.

Blenko Glass has been in contact with the appropriate officals. What we as the public can do is continue to buy BLENKO, make calls to our govt officials and write letters, one letter is more valuable than a dozen calls remember this. Written and mailed letters are extremely valuable. make the phone but also write a real letter, then sent the spam mail but pen pencil paper and write your thoughts, or typewriter whatever.
Communicate your concern and your desire to see BLENKO GLASS remain a part of Milton, W.Va.

Made the trip to Blenko today. Not much left. Most seems to be priced higher than it was before the announcement of closing. I'll be surprised if they have a big sale like Pilgrim when they shut down.

They started refilling the shelves today at 4:30 they refill each day at 4:30.
They are too busy and short handed to refill during the day, the store is almost empty at the end of most days.
Blenko will probably not be reducing prices - the gift shop prices are 50-75% below retail now.
