Folks started lining up on Wednesday,  please don't expect to arrive at 8am Saturday and be lucky enough to acquire a Birthday Vase by Blenko Glass.

The lines are long.  My family tries to be there before 2 am on Saturday morning....but you never know about the number of people in line.

This years vase is spectacular 

Its designed by Blenko's latest designer.  I have yet to meet them but have read and heard how well liked they are by the Blenko Craftsman and collectors.

Blenko's WV Birthday Vase -

A West Virginia Tradition:

Each year since 1980 Blenko Glass has produced a vase in honor of the State Of WVa 's Birthday.

The concept is said to have began as a conversation between Bill Blenko Jr and the Diamond Department Store.  

It's now going on 38 years.   Each year devoted Blenko Glass Collectors start standing in line 2-5 days ( or 6 hrs) prior to the 8 am sale. Often this is a family - friend event, folks bring xtra drinks and cookies to share during the wait.  A yearly  reunion of B-Day Collectors.
  The number of vases is limited to the age of our State.

The Blenko Project has recorded 10 complete sets.   If you have a complete set, please contact
theblenkoproject@aol.com .   The Blenko Project also assist folks with finding the vases they need to complete their B-Day set and to assist with rehoming BDay vases no longer needed.

This year the vase is exceptional.   It's large ( for those of you who want the architectural piece),  the new designers understand how important this piece is to collectors.   You'll agree when you see this it's an exceptional WVa Bday Vase.

Blenko’s 2018 WV Birthday piece stands tall like our mountains. Over 22” in height, our newest Birthday piece celebrates the Mountain State.

Designers Emma Walters and Andrew Shaffer have designed a spire-like bottle form reflecting the strength of our state’s mountains and our people. Like our state, each piece is the product of many hands, many people.

The piece proclaims and celebrates the efforts of many to bring to reality the creation of a single object. Many hands at Blenko work to create each piece. Like our state, the decanter-bottle has many ‘facets’ that join to make the whole.

The striking colors of Blenko glass found in the WV piece, represent West Virginia’s heartland. Captured in the glass is every hill and holler, from our cool waters to the bountiful forest carpet beneath endless skies. Here is a moment within the West Virginia hills and mountains captured in handmade glass.

Each object has a subtle wood texture intended to residually imprint our enduring natural resource, the West Virginia hardwood forest. The native Appalachian cherry hardwood, or “Timber”, we have used to create this piece will burn a little more with each glass piece created. Left behind is our hand-formed, mouth blown glass what will, like our traditions and culture, live on for generations to come.
