Heart of Glass - Blenko Glass

Blenko Glass is a West Virginia treasure that spans generations. Nothing symbolizes the state of West Virginia better or more beautifully than Blenko Glass. We will discuss current and former craftsmen and designers and how important it is that Blenko and West Virginia glass be appreciated and valued by the younger generation.

The Backyard Brawl, The 100th Game
By Dale Grdnic
Senior WriterPosted Nov 26, 2007
The 100th renewal of the Backyard Brawl, the annual football game between Pitt and West Virginia, will take place Saturday at 7:45 p.m. at Milan Puskar Stadium in Morgantown, W.Va. and normally that would be enough to fan the flames in this heated rivalry.
However, there's much more at stake than local bragging rights and a recruiting edge. The host Mountaineers (10-1 overall and 5-1 in the Big East) are ranked second by the Associated Press, first by USA Today and second in the BCS standings, so they can clinch a berth in the BCS championship game and win
Jedijawa - This is not my Blog always has the latest WVU News! http://not-my.blogspot.com/

Open Mike had this song on his blog and it's called Twas The Night Before Pittsburgh and he credits Mike Casazza of the Charleston Daily Mail. Here it goes...

Twas the night before Pittsburgh, when all through my mind,
Were visions of couch burnings, both yours and mine
.Firemen were resting and acting quite lazy,But they knew that things were about to get crazy. The players were nestled, Markell did his dreds,While visions of Bourbon Street danced in their heads
.There were Quinton’s gold teeth, Larry’s son in his lap,While the quarterback made noises to sound like a cat
.When down in the end zone there arose such a noise,They sprang from their homes and called all their boys
.To the field they flew, fast as Devine,Making sure to pick up the offensive line.
The invaders had arrived at the stadium early,These Panthers were looking noticeably surly.
There was a point to this late-night trip through the hills,They were out on the field doing defensive drills. With a dapper old coach who combed his mustache,You knew in a moment it must be Wannstedt.
He’d made his name as a defensive master,And he whistled and shouted for them to run faster!“Watch Slaton! Watch Schmitt! Watch Reynaud and White!Watch option! Watch bubble! Could be a rough night!
Let’s stand at the goal line and build a big wall,And keep them from their shot to play for it all!
”As they began to believe his bold rally cry,There was a flash and a pop up high in the sky.
They reacted the same, with a quick double take,What they saw made them stop in their cleats and quake.
On the top of the stadium a man made his stand,As he calmly adjusted his Nike wristbands.
He said “My name’s Rich, as you surely know,”Then ran down the bleachers with Mountaineers in tow.

They were dressed all in gold, from their heads to their feet,And they looked like they’d win a 12-team track meet.
A bundle of plays he had in his book,And there was no mistaking that confident look.Pitt’s eyes, how they widened!

Their hearts, how they pounded! All for the biggest game since this brawl was founded. One side had momentum, the other desperation,
This battle wouldn’t wait for the eyes of the nation!Caridi was roused from a much-needed sleep,So were Hickman and Hertzel, the last with a bleep.

They brought their pens, paper and elaborate prose,To witness this battle of bitter old foes.

It was dark and cold, your breath you could see,But that didn’t stop the kickoff of Pat McAfee.

The tackle, of course, came from an old Hawk named Emery,And so started this game that would soon be a memory.

They spoke so few words as they went to work,But score after score drove the visitors berserk.

The Mountaineers rolled, as was expected,While the Panthers backed off, clearly dejected.
There was a Gatorade shower that gave poor Rich shivers,
While no one seemed happier than one Vaughn Rivers. They exclaimed after singing about Almost Heaven,“Well see you in New Orleans on January 7.”

Have a great weekend. On the way back home consider stopping at BLENKO GLASS I 64 Milton exit - its clearly marked. The

A BLAST FROM THE PAST!

There are a number of vintage items - all with connection to BLENKO GLASS , I would love to own. The item below is on my top 20! Isn't this awesome. It is the work of Marvin Lipofsky. Marvin Lipofsky (b. September 1, 1938) is an American glass artist. He was a central figure in the spread of the American studio glass movement, introducing it to California.
Lipofsky was born in Barrington, Illinois. In 1962, he earned a BFA in Industrial Design from the University of Illinois, and he went on to earn both an MS and an MFA in Sculpture from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1964. There he studied under Harvey Littleton, considered one of the founders of the studio glass movement along with Dominick Labino. He would introduce the concepts of the movement during his subsequent stint as a Design instructor at the University of California, Berkeley, where he taught until 1972. During this time, he was responsible for training many studio artists.
In 1967, he founded the glass program at the California College of Arts and Crafts, which he headed for two decades. He was also a founder of the Glass Art Society, and has served as editor of its journal.

Hershey KISSES!

As a child and even today I Love dark chocolate HERSHEY KISSES!
While my love of Chocolate is life long. From age 12 on I knew the difference between Hershey and GODIVA. Preferring Godiva. But Hershey's Kisses everyone loves the kisses!
A Blog reader has sent stories about Hershey moving to MEXICO for more than a year. However, I read nothing in our newspaper or the New Times which I try to see on Sundays.
Pennsylvania is a large state, my reasoning was - IF this was happening it would be in the NEWS!.
While I haven't found a local article its official! HERSHEY CHOCOLATE is moving to MEXICO! I haven't visited HERSHEY Pa. or HERSHEY PARK both are on my short list of future road trips. Today Robert send official confirmation of his story about the move. It is official Hershey is or has started to move from Pa. I'm attaching Robert's comments for you.
My blogger friend Robert Graham who sent the story says:
" M.S. Hershey had a dream... I will buy my OWN Sugar, Milk, Cocoa beans, (all natural mind you!) and make candy...(no tariffs etc..) EVEN during the depression...HE and the Company made money Now after the death of Mr. Hershey, Corporate big wigs are ruining the name... AND perhaps the product M.S. created. Hillary, Please pass it on...What a bunch of college educated "idiots". I worked in Hershey Pa. Thank you M.S. Hershey for all the things I have and all you have done for me and my family..."I" do appreciate it... as the current Hershey Company ....you are ruining the name, the company, and MANY lives in central Pennsylvania. So Hershey executives are closing plants in the US , laying off over a thousand people, and destroying Mr. Hershey's dream, all to cut labor, material costs and it seems to AVOID PAYING ANY US TAXES! The company will save about $170 million a year, all on the backs of the American people. The top executives will still make their mega bucks and the laid off workers will have to find other jobs, some probably at minimum wage due to their age. All this to take their jobs Mexico . WHAT part of the "GREAT" American Chocolate Bar is left?...NOTHING! I know you focus on Glass and West Virginia, but it the loosing of Jobs as
companies move out of the country is not a WVa problem its a national problem. We need to speak up before anything else goes and to look at the label of our food as well as glass." Thank you Hillary for letting me share. RG
note: Robert reports he is a retired attorney who worked in Hershey Pa for more than 20 years.

The Night Before Thanksgiving Day

Photo of Micheal Crump - BLenko Collector doing a mural painting in my parents side yard and garage 11/20/. Blenko Collectors - Join! They are a very talented group. Engineers, Doctors, Pathologist, Secretaries, Lawyers, Artist....whatever your profession collecting Blenko can add a new dimension to your life.

In our home - the Wednesday before Thanksgiving Day is spent at the gym, then baking ginger bread 'bears', pumpkin pie, 'washing lots of BLENKO tableware', setting the table in preparation of a family dinner. We try to as a family slow down this night, peacefully thinking and giving thanks for the year and our life together.

This year has been a wonderful year for me personally and for BLENKO GLASS. Tomorrow - The Holiday allows that we should take the time to be thankful for the tremendous people in our lives, the wonderful opportunities. Our health, our ability to work, for meaningful work and relationships.

I'm going to leave you 3 great quotes on the subject of giving and being thankful.

hjh

At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us.-- Albert Schweitzer
Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever have enough.-- Oprah Winfrey
Blessed are those that can give without remembering and receive without forgetting.-- Author Unknown

some Turkey Day Info:

Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day, is a traditional North American holiday to give thanks at the conclusion of the harvest season. Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States and on the second Monday of October in Canada.

Top 5 Family Thanksgiving Traditions
From Kimberly Powell,

Traditions are a big part of the Thanksgiving holiday, and every American family has their own way of celebrating. From stuffing the turkey to taking in a football game, here are the five most popular.
1. Turkey and TrimmingsFrom the first Thanksgiving to today's turkey burgers, turkeys are an American tradition dating back centuries. According to the National Turkey Federation, 95 percent of Americans eat turkey at Thanksgiving. Regional twists offer variations on the traditional roasted bird, including coffee rubbed turkey from Hawaii, salt encrusted turkey from New England, and deep fried turkey from the South.

2. Time Out for the PigskinThroughout the United States, football on Thanksgiving Day is as big a part of the celebration as turkey and pumpkin pie. Dating back to the first intercollegiate football championship held on Thanksgiving Day in 1876, traditional holiday football rivalries have become so popular that a reporter once called Thanksgiving "a holiday granted by the State and the Nation to see a game of football."

3. Parading AroundThe first American Thanksgiving Day parade was held in 1920, organized by Gimbel's Department Store in Philadelphia, not Macy's as most people believe. The NYC Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade tradition actually began in 1924, and has grown into an annual event of balloons, bands, and floats, enjoyed by more than 46 million people each year in person and on TV.

4. Making a WishDoes your family fight over the wishbone from the Thanksgiving turkey? Known as a "lucky break" the tradition of tugging on either end of a fowl's bone to win the larger piece and its accompanying "wish" dates back to the Etruscans of 322 B.C. The Romans brought the tradition with them when they conquered England and the English colonists carried the tradition on to America.

5. Giving ThanksLast, but certainly not least, Thanksgiving is about giving thanks for the people and blessings of the past year. From pre-meal prayers to providing holiday meals to the homeless, the holiday is truly a celebration of praise and thanksgiving.

An Article from the Texas Blenko Collectors Newsletter

Recently there has been quite a bit of
discussion between Blenko collectors
regarding the definition of “true”
collecting. Some collectors purchase the very
best examples of Blenko they can afford. As
a rule these collections tend to be smaller
but of a higher quality and value. Then there
are some of us who are “Hunter and Gatherer”
collectors. We’ve never met a piece of
Blenko we didn’t like (or almost never).
These collections can run into the hundreds
or thousands of pieces. Finally there are collectors
who collect Blenko glass in as much it
helps their décor. Of course there are variations
of the above or combinations of two or
all three. No that there is a right way or a
wrong to collect Blenko. Bottom line, if a
hobby isn’t fun, why do it? I wouldn’t trade
the numerous excursions with my wife or
friends on our long hunts for Blenko glass for
anything. Be it a flea market, antique show
or shop. It’s always been fun, even when we
come home empty handed. I always rationalize
by saying we saved money that week. At
the first Blenko Collectors Convention, I met
a collector who limited his collection to 100
pieces of glass. As he found better pieces he
sold his less desirable pieces. This way, he
hoped, he could always have the best Blenko
he could afford. At the time Karin and I were
already over a hundred pieces and there was
no end in sight. I told Karin I admired this
collector’s discipline and goal, and perhaps
we could adapt such a plan of action. After
we mulled over the thought for a while we realized
what worked for him, probably would not
work for us (we are undisciplined). Hindsight
has proven us right. I like seeing the hundreds
of pieces in our window every morning we start
our day. Karin looks around and say “we sure
have some pretty glass”. The fact of the matter
is don’t let anyone person, pundit or expert define
you or your collection. It’s your glass and
your hobby and yes we all have some pretty
glass.

Blenko Ashtrays

Ashtrays have always been a part of Blenko’s
production from the 1930s thru today.
Blenko's ashtrays have been unique. One of
Winslow Anderson’s ashtray designs won the
Good Design award in 1950. Believe it not
there are hard-to-find Blenko ashtrays. The trilobe
bowl #5831 is one and the 5722 is another
hard to find design. Blenko’s ashtray designs
always have a bit of panache!

Local Milton Photographer Captures AWARD with BLENKO

Laura Moul is well known in the Milton area as a school teacher and a photographer. Her photos of Blenko glass and glassworks are sold at BLENKO - they can be used as post cards or as the perfect addition to your GLASS GIFT - the photo of the glass worker creating the glass. Its an awesome combination. The cards are very inexpensive.
We often buy photo cards of the Blenko gardens so Friends can see the beautiful flowering beds. Lauras' photos of people are even better - she is somehow able to capture their sole in the photos. You'll just have to search for her photos while you're at Blenko. Laura's photos are works of art. Its nice to have a local person take such interest in photographing Blenko and the folks at Blenko.
She recently send the above photo and this note.
"Just thought I'd share the attached photo. At the 7th Annual National Miniature Exhibition at The Renaissance Gallery in Huntington, I won Honorable Mention with this photo. Only 15 artwork received awards out of 125. The juror was John Allen Thompson, world renowned miniature artist from Washington, D. C."

Your Question : What is a DALLE DE VERRE?

Thank you for asking - Its a fancy name for SLAB GLASS.

Dalle De Verre (Slab Glass)
Blenko Glass Company began producing Dalle de Verre in the late 1950's when the process was brought to us from France, making Blenko the first United States company to produce dalles. Blenko dalles are hand cast from soda-lime-silica glass and come in a wide variety of repeatable colors. Our hand cast method has not changed since we began making dalles. Dalle de Verre is relatively easy to design and construct, and is an excellent alternative to traditional sheet glass installations. Sample sets are available. BETTY and VERNOICA LOVE BLENKO!

Photos of BLENKO GLASS from 50s and Comic BOOK Character from ARCHIE - my favorite 50s comic book.

Archie Comics is an American comic book publisher known for its many series featuring the fictional teenage Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, Reggie Mantle and Forsythe "Jughead" Jones characters created by Bob Montana. All characters were based on people he knew in Haverhill, Massachusetts

The 1950s decade refers to the years 1950 to 1959 inclusive. BLENKO GLASS of Milton, West Virginia www.blenkoglass.com designs were classic and are still being made and collected.

The 40's -60s are my favorite time period I love the music, clothes, film, comics. This was a
time of exploration and growth.

Traditional pop music such as the bebop era of jazz hit its peak and climaxed as early rock and roll music led by Elvis Presley was embraced by teenagers and the emerging youth culture as the first wave of the Baby Boom reached its teen years. Rock music was generally dismissed or condemned by older generations. Other prominent rock and roll musicians included Paul Anka, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard.

Hollywood
Known as the "Golden Age", this era of movie-making saw the release of many classics, talented stars and directors. Films like Sunset Boulevard with William Holden and Gloria Swanson, All About Eve with Bette Davis, and Ben-Hur with Charlton Heston, would become instant classics.
Westerns were getting bigger in the 1950s, with films like High Noon starring Gary Cooper, and Cheyenne with Clint Walker, wrangling moviegoers back to the time of outlaws and wild shoot-outs. There was no shortage of war movies: the 1950s saw the release of Stalag 17, directed by Billy Wilder, The Bridge over the River Kwai starring Alec Guinness, and Stanley Kubrick's Paths of Glory, a potent anti-war film that starred Kirk Douglas as the French Col. Dax, defending three soldiers accused of cowardice.
Thrillers were also turning into a huge genre in post-war Hollywood. Alfred Hitchcock directed many big name pictures, including Rear Window, starring James Stewart and Grace Kelly, North by Northwest with Cary Grant, and Vertigo, with James Stewart and Kim Novak.
Musicals including Singing in the Rain and An American in Paris with Gene Kelly were released and White Christmas starring Bing Crosby.
Animated films included Walt Disney's Cinderella and Alice in Wonderland.
Comedies are always popular, and the 1950s were no exception. It Happens Every Spring, Some Like It Hot with Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon, and The Ladykillers starring Alec Guinness and Peter Sellers, would be loved by many. The year 1951 would have an important comedy milestone, the last film of the great comedy duo, Laurel and Hardy, Atoll K, in which the pair starred as the inheritors of an island in the Pacific.

This weekend try to slow the pace...search for BLENKO GLASS from the 50s, rent or borrow
a movie from the 50s. Life should be enjoyed. Read the newspaper - get ink on your fingers - get off the computer and LIVE this WEEKEND....use the list above as a starting point!

WOMEN IN THE WEST VIRGINIA LEGISLATURE- Martha Werhle

WOMEN IN THE WEST VIRGINIA LEGISLATURE - First place Social Science State Fair. In junior high I was obsessed with the history of Women in the Political realm.

While working (2 years) on this project I had the honor to meet all the ladies serving and many who had retired. The female members (delegates and senators) took me under their wing - sharing stories - making certain I met everyone - making phone calls on my behalf. It was a wonderful learning experience. Martha Werhle and Martha Walker were most especially instrumental in having me meet all the ladies and attend political rallies. PHYLISS RUTLEDGE, Bonnie Brown, Pat White, Shelly Moore Capito, Sharon Spencer, Jae Spears , the list goes on. The LADIES in the West Virginia legislature were strong women but they also took time to nurture. Mrs. Capito, Ms. Rutledge, Mrs. Caperton, Mrs. Wehrle, Mrs. Walker and Ms. Mary Pearl Compton all came to the Science Fair to see the complete project.
Mary Pearl Compton from Monroe County became my pen pal for a while. When ever she thought of some new tidbit of information - - or saw an article she thought I might find helpful she would pass it along. A retired teacher who never stopped learning and passing information. Martha Werhle and Martha Walker both very powerful ladies in the legislature also continued to take time to occasionally send materials of interest long after the
project was completed. The WOMEN IN THE WEST VIRGINIA Legislature take their role as leaders and role models very seriously. Looking back it amazes me anyone had time to deal with a very persistent 13 year old with a desire to know 'everything' about being a WOMAN and being political!

Life is funny isn't it! You have amazing people enter and exit your life on a daily basis and yet we often don't take the time to realize how very blessed we were to have them.
Everything and everyone moves so quickly.
Recently I heard someone say ' There is a lesson to be learned in every encounter. '

I am thinking about WOMEN IN THE LEGISLATURE today - because my parents phoned last evening to say MARTHA WERHLE passed at age 81. She will I am certain be remembered as the 'classic beauty, with the ability to embrace everyone and listen with all her heart to your desires.' Martha Werhle will be long remembered as a PIONEER in the West Virginia legislature one who never compromised her strong value system and who wanted to include everyone in the process. A Graceful Lady - A Member of the West Virginia Legislature.
