Heart of Glass - Blenko Glass
Blenko Glass is a West Virginia treasure that spans generations. Nothing symbolizes the state of West Virginia better or more beautifully than Blenko Glass. We will discuss current and former craftsmen and designers and how important it is that Blenko and West Virginia glass be appreciated and valued by the younger generation.

I have 3 dozen un opened boxes of Blenko in my garage. How do I display so much Blenko? In the past I've separated by color, I display Ruby on Valentine Day, the Green on St Patty's Day etc...but its too much trouble. Don't say buy a display case. I own two in my dining room and I have shelves built in my living room. If any readers have ideas or can share what they do I would appreciate all help.
Could you be a compulsive shopper? Blenko is addictive - in my family we think of it as a POSITIVE ADDICTION!
Attached are photos from my family room. I put up very inexpensive shelving from Lowe's home improvement. Painted everything white - glass looked better with a white background.
I bought inexpensive under cabinet lights - again from Lowe's. Below are photos of WV Birthday Pieces ( just a few - I donated my collection several years ago to WVU ) the last two photos are pictures of the Variations by Wayne Husted. This was a limited edition set sold by Husted and Blenko about 6 years ago. If you find these buy them - this set and the WV Birthday Vases are undervalued. hjh

Note: The smaller ruby with twisted stem ( 12 inches) was a gift - we aren't certain its Blenko.
Do you own unique Blenko? If so, please take photos and share with new collectors! If you want to sell your unique items - even better - we have 2 dozen new ( less than one year) collectors.
write to: email@example.com with photos and descriptions. Please include your name and contact info.

Blenko is NOT making this style currently. However, there are pitchers and glasses available most weeks at the VC gift shop. On line you have a wider selection. Don't see what you want? Phone 304 743 9081 ask for Mary - perhaps they have or can make!

The building is the ole Clendenin High School - renovation is superior, if you admire vintage buildings - You'll want to visit this historic building which houses a new clinic.
Like Ruby, good Rose, and good tangerine - the Ebony - when you can find -is more costly. Below are photos of Ebony Glass from my personal collection hjh. An example of ebony ( older) is on display in the Blenko Museum ( 2nd floor of Blenko Glass Visitor Center & gift Shop). Black (ebony) water bottles can be found in vintage shops for under $50.

Tangerine seems to be in several finishes but I can relate to three that come to mind that are all considered Tangerine. The pieces pictured are what most collectors see Tangerine comprised of a red/orange fading to yellow or amber coloration. A second variation is a dark red stopper/neck/top fading to almost clear or pale amber color. The third that is also Tangerine is where the piece is a reddish orange being very vibrant in color but the whole piece is close to being a solid color without any variation. You can go back into the August blog pages to see just such a photo I took of several crackle pieces in Tangerine. I do have a small footed ruffle edge vase that is bright orange in color. I am not familiar with the technique that causes the variation or fade but hopefully someone more knowledgeable will take this chance to educate us both.
The red orange only variation is generally early tangerine glass and the coloration of those pieces differs from current pieces due to the batch formulation. There have been a number of batch changes through the years due to chemical availability and safety measures. The other color variations are due to the way the piece is worked in production (i.e. The amount of time it is heated in the glory hole, how long it takes to go from production to the lehr, as well as various batch formulations). I will speak with Randy and see if he has anything to add.

This is one of my favorite Blenko Glass items - It was made as a part of the Fire & Ice series. It was a collection of 3 or 4 ( depending on when it was offered) items in the same beautiful fire & ice color combination. For a WVU alum this is the perfect color combination.
Fire & Ice can often be found fill with chips for dip - and the vases filled with
flowers at WVU Football pre and post game events.
