West Virginia's 150th birthday celebrated at WVU with latest gift from Blenko family

Blenko Glass Co. has continued its tradition of providing the West Virginia University art collection with the latest piece of limited edition glass from the West Virginia Birthday Blenko Glass Collection.
The donation to the University’s art collection has become an annual occurrence that takes place on the birthday of West Virginia – June 20 – and reflects that the family-owned business is one of those helping keep the culture and traditions of the Mountain State alive.
The West Virginia Birthday Blenko Glass Collection, which began in 1980, celebrates the state’s birthday by creating and selling the exact number of pieces as the state’s age.
This year, Blenko Glass, located in Milton, W.Va., has produced 150 original pieces to celebrate West Virginia’s 150th birthday. According to the Blenko Project web site, www.blenkoproject.org, WVU houses just one of the five known complete sets. Frequently, WVU’s rare collection is on display at the Blaney House, home of the WVU president.
Made of turquoise and crystal glass, this year’s birthday piece is called “Birthday Hearts for West Virginia”.
“We wanted this piece to be extra special,” said designer Arlon Bayliss. “As I thought about the theme for this important Blenko Birthday piece, my mind kept returning to how West Virginians hold each other in their hearts, to their generosity, hard work and love.”
Bayliss said the 11-inch tall, ballooning vase expands with billowing hearts from a narrow base to broad rounded shoulders, and a generous flared rim, to represent “a Mountaineer’s freedom.”
WVU was given a majority of this collection through the generosity of Hillary Homburg, a former WVU dental student and 2002 WVU Foundation Scholar.
In 2007, the alumna decided to donate her family’s personal collection of vases from 1980 to 2007 to WVU.
“At the time, my Blenko West Virginia Birthday vases were my most valuable asset,” said Homburg. “I wanted to give something back to the University, and also it would allow the vases to be seen by the many visitors to WVU.”
Homburg felt the collection would be best represented by the University because of its own unique and rich history within the State. Since then, the Blenko family has donated the latest collectable in the series to the University’s art collection each year.
Homburg writes in a daily blog for The (Huntington) Herald-Dispatch called “Heart of Glass,” http://herald-dispatchblogs04.blogspot.com/, where she talks about West Virginia glass.
The latest Blenko Glass collectible was given to WVU’s art collection in conjunction with A State of Minds: The Campaign for West Virginia’s University. The $750 million comprehensive campaign being conducted by the WVU Foundation on behalf of the University runs through December 2015.

Happy Father's Day!

My Uncles  have a favorite quote about Father's Day -  its from Mark Twain.  They were three boys growing up in the rural West Virginia with a very strict, tough father.

Mark Twain said:  " When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around.  But when I got to be 21,  I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years."

My own favorite quotes about Dad's day  changes with time.  Currently I'm reading Jim Valvano and my favorite quote is :  My father gave me the greatest gift anyone could give another person, he believed in me.  Jim Valvano.

What's your favorite Father's Day quote?

FYI:  www.blenkoglass.com  web site is open 24 hours a day for shopping.

A Look Back at Art Glass

Folks -  This article from New York Times was sent by blog reader Maggie:

A Look Back at Art Glass
New York Times

Most exhibitions taking place during the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York present the newest of the new, but “Big Color,” which opens at DDC on Friday, will offer a retrospective of architectural-scale glass designs created in the 1950s through the 1970s by resident artists at the Blenko Glass Company in West Virginia. Eight years in the making, the show is directed by Damon Crain, a 38-year-old former gallery owner and art consultant, who discovered art glass as a child in Ottawa and amassed a large collection of antique bottles by the age of 12. At DDC, he will show 120 pieces created by the Blenko designers Wayne Husted, Joel Philips Myers and John Nickerson. “Sometimes people aren’t sure how to live with the pieces,” he said, “but when they see them grouped together as a landscape, something clicks and it makes sense.” Prices range from $700 for a 22-inch cylindrical vase by Joel Myers to $5,500 for a 38-inch-tall decanter by Wayne Husted. DDC: 136 Madison Avenue (32nd Street), (212) 685-0800, cultureobject.com.

West Virginia's 150th Birthday - Celebrate with Blenko Glass.

We have less than 2 weeks. . . . until the WV Birthday Vase may be purchased, this  event is similar to the anticipation a child feels the night before his birthday party for many collectors.
Only 150 people will be able to purchase the WV Birthday Vase.
If you don't collect this series or aren't able to check the 'ticket'  . . . come to the visitors center,
look around. . . . you'll find water bottles in a dozen or more colors -  shelves filled with colorful, collectible Blenko Glass.   Blenko Glass has something for everyone,  trust me you will find something you 'must have' in the Visitors Center gallery of glass.
Perhaps you'll find something unique or unusual . . . .the gift shop/ visitors center frequently has end of day work,  artist proof, and colors that aren't in the catalog.  The "VC" is a bargain hunters paradise.
Blenko Glass shopping  can be a family event,  educators often saying sorting is a prerequisite to reading and writing skills.   Have your children help you shop - not just at Blenko but when you do estate and vintage stores seeking Blenko.  The ability to 'know' Blenko and look for 'colors' Mom and Dad want, helps a child feel useful and accomplished.
As a child I remember taking my  $5 or  $10 and going to Blenko yearly in search of a gift for my teacher, and on other gift giving occasions. Blenko continued to make the small paper weights and animal figures.
Seven years ago,  a senior in Rhode Island wrote to say she was making  her first trip to Blenko to  purchase glass for all her Xmas gifts.   Her initial letter stated she grew up in a home with Blenko
her Mom used the various colored glasses and bowls for holidays.   In her note this week she wrote her grandniece is  now collecting the mini water bottles.  She ( Anna Parsley) searches for Blenko water bottles with handle -  this one is much more difficult to find.
Blenko is a multi generational event.  Parents, grandparents, children - can collect and shop together.
Blenko Glass is a family owned company.  All Blenko Glass is made in USA, in Milton, WVa.
Blenko is made by families. Families who live and shop and volunteer in communities near Milton, WV.    Shown in the photo below is Eddie Powers.  Eddie 's grandfather was employed at Blenko until his death,   his father 'Red' Powers  served as the head of Antique Glass until his retirement.
Do you have a Blenko story?  We welcome your photos and your family's Blenko Glass collecting stories.  Please send to theblenkoproject@aol.com.   hjh

2014 GAS Conference Announced

2014 Conference Announcement
Chicago, Illinois, March 20 - 22, 2014
Strengthening Community, Collaboration, Forging New Bonds

Dear Members and Friends of the Glass Art Society,
The Glass Art Society is thrilled to announce that the 43rd conference will be held in the Windy City. Chicago is second to none when it comes to a thriving, diverse cultural scene.  It is home to renowned architecture, public art displays, galleries, museums and colleges, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and Millennium Park. We will be hosting the conference at well-known venues such as the historic Palmer House Hotel and the Chicago Cultural Center  - all centrally located in the heart of downtown.
CR_ChicagoRiver_WillisTower.jpgGAS will be partnering with one of the newest additions to Chicago’s flourishing art scene, Ignite Glass Studios, located in the West Loop neighborhood. Hot glass, flameworking and cold working will be showcased in this state of the art learning center. Our second demo site is West Supply Company, a unique facility that joins glass production with a foundry, which casts concrete and metals for some of the most notable collections in the high-end design, interiors, and gallery markets.
The conference will therefore focus on artist communities and collaboration, the forging of new bonds and new materials, bringing together artists with diverse backgrounds, techniques, and design aesthetics.
We are now accepting proposals for conference content, including lectures, demonstrations, lec-mos, and panel discussions. GAS invites you to submit presentation ideas that will best highlight the theme.

Blenko Glass 2013 WV Birthday Vase

Today  I had more than a dozen emails asking  - When should I plan to arrive at Blenko - I want to make 100% certain I receive a Birthday Vase.
This year Arlon Bayliss  has again designed a unique WVa Birthday Vase.  In past years, the WV Birthday has often been - well-  not spectacular.    The Bayliss designed WV Birthday Vases are
outstanding.  The 2013  may be my favorite!
NOW  about what time to arrive -  in past years those folks arriving at Blenko before 6 am on Saturday Morning were assured a vase.   This year - well its a special year -  the 150th anniversary of  Statehood for WVa.
I'm asking you the die hard collectors for your suggestion about time -  what time should  a new collector arrive to assure he/ she receives the vase???

This photo is of Arlon Bayliss  ( designer)  and Randy Rider ( Foreman Blenko) working on the artist proof of 2013  WV Birthday Vase.
