Heart of Glass - Blenko Glass

Blenko Glass is a West Virginia treasure that spans generations. Nothing symbolizes the state of West Virginia better or more beautifully than Blenko Glass. We will discuss current and former craftsmen and designers and how important it is that Blenko and West Virginia glass be appreciated and valued by the younger generation.

MAG Auction Friday May 31 2013

Greetings

I am pleased to share, on behalf of The Museum of American Glass in West Virginia, the announcement of one of the great activities to be held at the Museum in Weston, WV to celebrate the 200th anniversary of hot glass making in West Virginia.

We will host a Benefit Auction at the Museum on Friday May 31, 2013 beginning at 7pm. The Museum will be open from noon until sale time on the day of the auction for previewing. The volunteer auctioneer is MAG friend Rock Wilson. Some items to be sold are pure donations to MAG, others will be consigned with 20% of the hammer price being a donation fundraiser for the Museum from the consignor. There are no buyer premiums.

ALL the glass must be made in West Virginia. Pieces to be sold will be displayed in the Museum window for the month prior to the auction.

Members of the Museum can consign up to six items per person to the auction. The request is that items consigned have an anticipated value of greater than $10. There is NO upper value limit! Call MAG in advance (304. 269.5006) to add you name and the number of pieces you wish to consign. The auction will have a minimum of 100 lots of WV glass. A cap of 150 pieces is the most that will be accepted. All pieces consigned should be delivered in person or by post to the museum no later than 6 May to insure they are imaged and appear on the auctionzip web site for the auction. Pieces are indeed welcomed as donations from which the entire sale price will be a donation to MAG.

Thank you for your continued interest and support

Can you help this Reader ID her glass?

Hello,
I have been unsuccessful identifying the pictures of the art piece
attached to this e-mail.  The antique dealer I bought it from PROMISED
me it was Blenko, but I can not find it in any catalogs.  It has the
characteristics of a Blenko piece, but I just don't know for sure.  It
stands 12 inches high and has about a 25 inch circumfrance.  It is
quite heavy, has air bubbles throughout, but has a rather smooth
pontil.  I want to give it to a collector for a wedding gift next
weekend, but don't want to make a big mistake if it's not Blenko.
Please help!  Thank you ever so much!

BOOMERS !

Tip #  414  The only consequence to  to more candles on the cake - is a hotter party!

Read the book - join the movement!

Vintage Blenko -  Yes!  Older can be Better!
BOOMERS   was written by James T.  He and his wife Karen have owned  GOOD LIVING ( a series of retirement homes) since 1982.

Karen and James were in their late 20s  early 30s when they opened GOOD LIVING.   Karen a MSW- focused on Elderly  (social worker) and James ( a multi talented community organizer )  became involved in aging as young people.  Now both nearing or in the age ( 60) we  ( those of us under 30) consider to be OLD!   Karen and James are the final word on aging in West Virginia.

I'm going to suggest if you are a Senior who collects glass,  you know a senior,  or like me - your parents are in the 60s  - purchase this book.

It is filled with practical ideas and good humor.

Can we help this reader ID her blenko vase?

Hello Hillary,

I have attached two pictures one is of the vase itself and the other of the signature on the bottom where it appears the Blenko date stamp was removed.
I have been told that this piece was a special piece done by Richard Blenko for PBS at the time and he signed it himself.
All I know is that the signatures I have seen do not look like the one on this vase and I just need to verify if my lovely vase
is a) Blenko glass and b) signed by Richard Blenko in 2001 in Detroit.

Thank you for your time and quick response,
Sincerely,
Jeanne Keen

Prepare for St Patty Day - Green Glass

Isn't

everyone IRISH

If you haven't bought your GREEN GLASS for March, The Time Is Now! Blenko Glass in Milton, WV has Green Glass! When you purchase glass in lieu of plastic or paper you are buying a family treasure. What special things happen in your life on St Patrick's Day?

This Green Top Hat is the center of my St Patrick's Day Theme. I fill it with hard candy, or flowers, or fruit during the month of March.
Start your own St. Patrick's Day tradition.

Below you will find info from Steve the webmaster about St Patricks' Day available on the web.
Saint Patrick's Day (Irish: Lá ’le Pádraig or Lá Fhéile Pádraig), colloquially St. Paddy's Day or Paddy's Day, is an annual feast day which celebrates Saint Patrick (circa 385–461 AD), one of the patron saints of Ireland, and is generally celebrated on March 17.

The day is the national holiday of Ireland. It is a bank holiday in Northern Ireland and a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland and Montserrat. In Canada, Great Britain, Australia, the United States and New Zealand, it is widely celebrated but is not an official holiday.

It became a feast day in the Roman Catholic Church due to the influence of the Waterford-born Franciscan scholar Luke Wadding in the early part of the 17th century, and is a holy day of obligation for Roman Catholics in Ireland. The feast day usually falls during Lent; if it falls on a Friday of Lent (unless it is Good Friday), the obligation to abstain from eating meat can be lifted by the local bishop. The date of the feast is occasionally, yet controversially, moved by church authorities when March 17 falls during Holy Week; this happened in 1940 when Saint Patrick's Day was observed on April 3 in order to avoid it coinciding with Palm Sunday, and happened again in 2008, having been observed on 15 March.

Blenko cards

Hello Hillary,
I ordered cards from Diane. They are beautiful. I wanted to frame the cards, so I requested her to sign the front of the cards, which she did. Diane is very nice and professional. I requested her to make a black card, and she did.
Below is picture of the set of 8 cards. I will send more pictures once I frame them.
Regards,
V
