Offered for Fall 2016 are our 6'' October Blush pumpkins. Made by layering two different gathers of glass, this is an entirely distinct look from all prior Blenko pumpkins. Each has a hand applied green glass stem atop the fading orange to amber over milk white interior pumpkin. Each is marked Blenko and 2016. The interior glass reacts with the surface color creating minor striations and swirls of great intrigue in the subtle shading. A sincerely marvelous piece of handmade American glass. Available for a limited time only. Do not delay.

Our recent addition to the Blenko line of animals is this swimming sea turtle with small fish swimming near him. Available as a non-drilled item or as a hand-drilled item to create a hole for hanging. As a suncatcher or window ornament these are striking. As a flat desk ornament they are fun as well.  They can even serve as a beach themed tree ornament. 2.5” to 3.5” in diameter. Each is different due to the handmade process. 
Tangerine color may vary, no two items are exactly alike.


If you own water front property we suggest having these drilled and hanging in a slider door window.
It doesn't have to be ocean front - a house on the Kanawha River  or a Lake.

The Blenko Glass sea turtle also can be used as part of a hostess gift for owner of the vacation place you are using.

Gift giving is often more difficult,  as everyone is older and has all the "stuff" they need.

What to do with the BLENKO?

  I recently inherited 10 boxes of Blenko Glass.  I am not a collector.  Suggestions for how to display or sell.

My parents were / are also Blenko Glass fanatics, they are in the process of downsizing.  They decided to donate all duplicates and items that were not special to the Union Mission,  YWCA, and Goodwill .  I think a box or two also went to the Habitat Resale Store.
   Any good charity will happily accept your glass donation.  If you are donating special items ( include the print out re: value of each)  also any information you may have received from the person who gifted you the glass.
    Selling is another option.  You can sell for yourself on EBAY or contact a local ( to your area)
consignment shop.
    Blenko Glass is a highly recognized and highly valued glass.  You'll find buyers who want your items.
    You mentioned displaying.   I'm posting a few photos of Blenko used in the home.  I'm not a big fan of shelves of Blenko.  I prefer rotating decorative items.

GLASS ART SOCIETY ANNOUNCES 2017 MEMBER JURIED EXHIBITION
AT 46TH ANNUAL GAS CONFERENCE IN NORFOLK, VIRGINIAMember artist applications accepted from September 15-November 15, 2016

 

September 15, 2016 – The Glass Art Society (GAS), in partnership with Glass Wheel Studio, is pleased to announce a call to eligible member artists for the 2017 GAS Member Juried Exhibition. The exhibition will take place from May 27– July 16, 2017 at Glass Wheel Studio in Norfolk, Virginia, and will be a highlight of the 46^th annual GAS conference, Reflections from the Edge: Glass, Art, and Performance. 

The GAS Member Juried Exhibition is designed to showcase the excellence and diversity of work created by Glass Art Society members. A professional jury will determine featured works on the basis of originality, craftsmanship, and the creative exploration of the material of glass. Prizes will be awarded to select artists.

“The Glass Art Society has over 2,000 members from all over the world. Many are incredibly gifted artists that work in a wide range of glass traditions and innovative techniques,” says Pamela Koss, executive director of the Glass Art Society. “We are absolutely thrilled to be showcasing the work created by our accomplished membership at next year's GAS Member Juried Exhibition in Norfolk."

“Glass Wheel is excited to partner with the Glass Art Society for this unprecedented juried exhibition,” says Cheryl White, director of Glass Wheel Studio. “We cannot wait to share the work of GAS’s many talented member artists with the thriving community of glass lovers here in Norfolk.”

Applications from eligible GAS members at the Individual Membership level and above, working in all glassmaking processes and those documenting glass-related performance pieces, will be accepted from September 15-November 15, 2016 through the Glass Art Society website at http://www.glassart.org/MemberExhibition.html. Blenko Glass Company. Bridge of Honor

The Bridge of Honor, connecting Pomeroy, Ohio, and Mason, W.Va., glows in full illumination Sunday night over the Ohio River. The cobalt blue lights, installed earlier this year by the West Virginia Department of Transportation (which is responsible for maintaining the bridge) after “being dark” since March 2014, had to be repaired instead of replaced because the cobalt blue color that signifies the military Purple Heart is no longer mined and lenses for the lights could not be found. Blenko Glass, in Milton, W.Va., managed to replicate the color and produce a limited number for the bridge. The original lights, according to WVDOT, burst because of the bulb heat, which reaches in excess of 200 degrees. The heat generated by the bulbs could not escape because of the original covers. Warren Skaggs, repair and design engineer with the WVDOT, told Ohio Valley Publishing earlier this year that each heat-tempered bulb was replaced, as well as several ballasts. Skaggs said the bulbs have a four-year life.

New Blenko Design Series

Blenko is pleased to announce the initial offering in an entirely new design series. Created by Blenko’s newest designer Aaron Harvey, the line will include an entire set of chess piece inspired decanters. The initial piece is a pawn, with the traditional shape of large spherical top and a colonnade–like form. Each piece made in the chess set will be offered in crystal with cobalt accents and cobalt with crystal accent. The pawn measures roughly 10.5 inches in height. It bears all the hallmarks of handmade glass including a rough pontil on the base and will bear the sand carved name of Blenko and the year. The stopper for the pawn is an oversized, contrasting color hollow ball that sits atop the piece

The line, titled Checkmate, will include the suite of pieces in a full chess set. Pawn, knight, bishop, rook, king and queen are in planning and are to be produced over the next year to year and a half. A grouping of three differing Checkmate decanters make a strong visual statement. For the intense chess aficionado an entire oversized chess set could be assembled in both crystal and cobalt and a game played.

Designer Harvey is a graduate of Concord University in Athens, WV. The Checkmate line is his first expansive line for Blenko. The pawn is currently in production and available for immediate shipment. It retails for $78 and is available at shop.blenko.com

Blenko Glass. The PUMPKINS Are Arriving!

Blenko Glass keeps pumpkins in stock 365 days a year.
HOWEVER, in September they start making pumpkins for the PUMPKIN FESTIVAL ( we've told you about this event - yearly held in Milton).  The different shops at Blenko try to out do one another and make unique one of a kind pumpkins for the festival.  Last year, a friend purchase a pumpkin with an 8 3/4  inch stem - most common Blenko pumpkin stems are 3-6  inches.

This year Blenko is adding a Pumpkin  color  called Harvest.

The Blenko Project has several on going programs.
We attempt to assist new collectors with finding proper ID for their glass.
We prefer to assist novice collectors, NOT experienced sellers of Blenko.
We will assist anyone, but will not identify more than 6 piece per individual per year.
We are all volunteers,  we have day jobs, families and little free time.
We are NOT paid by BLENKO or anyone else.  Everyone is a Volunteer!
We are all professionals,  who collect WVA Glass or Blenko Glass or in the case of one volunteer
not a collector but one who appreciates research and  helping others.


IF you are familiar with BLENKO and wish to assist with identifications, please contact us.  We won't ask you to identify more than one item per month - unless you ask for additional.

We also need help maintaining the BLENKO PROJECT www.blenkoproject.org website.  We are currently behind with uploading the new glass items.

In my family as in most West Virginia Families, Labor Day is a time for being together as a family. We most often spend this holiday at the ocean.  We always spend the holiday with family, playing games, eating and watching sports.
Many Blenko Glass Collectors bring out their Red, White & Blue glass for  the table ware and Blenko for the flowers.   My Aunt Hazel used Blenko to hold the small USA Flags she placed on the picnic tables.  IN West Virginia, handcrafted glass is a way of life.  Long before the 'back to basics or back to nature' movement.  West Virginians were using and enjoy handcrafted glass.  Glass often made by their friends and neighbors.

Labor Day is observed in the U.S. on every first Monday in September as a day to recognize the contributions of American workers of all industries to the U.S. economy. It is also meant to give workers a well-earned day off to relax at home or to get out for recreation.

To many, Labor Day marks the end of the summer season, even as Memorial Day marks its beginning. Many see Labor Day as their last chance to get out and take a vacation before summer is gone, and many workers get a two-week annual vacation period with Labor Day Weekend right in the middle of the two weeks off.

Most U.S. schools restart classes, after the long summer break, about a week before Labor Day. Others schools, however, resume classes on the day after Labor Day, thus allowing families to get in their last taste of summer before the school year gets underway.

Parents if your child's school doesn't offer a field trip to BLENKO GLASS in Milton, WVa.  make the suggestion at a PTA meeting.   Blenko Glass is one of only three remaining WVa Glass Manufacturers and the only maker of antique stain glass.

The Blenko Project is about 18 months behind in responding to emails from collectors, wanna be collectors, and friends of Blenko.   We lost two of our most valued volunteers in December 2015, and 19 months ago we lost Dr Vivek Yadav our webmaster.  We have yet to find replacements.

This is NOT Blenko.  It was sold in large quantities at the 'Tuesday Morning' store.  Blenko Glass did make a heart bud vase, very similar in size, the Blenko heart was 99% of the time done in crystal and is much heavier than this imitation.

MCM Glass Symposium this weekend in Weston WV

The Museum of American Glass in West Virginia will host its 4th annual American Mid-Century Modern Glass Symposium on Friday and Saturday in Weston

Registration for the symposium is $79, which includes both days of activities and two meals. For those who are Museum of American Glass members, the cost is $69.

The symposium will be held at the museum, which is located at 230 Main Ave. in Weston.

I know this to be  Blenko - it was made for a fund raiser WV Museum of Glass conducted a few years ago.  You are correct it is NOT in the catalog.
At the time of purchase the Museum valued this at $100 ( approx.).
   It is a nice almost one of a kind piece of Blenko.  Thank you for sharing this photo.

HI Doc,
Juts wanted to send along this nice pair of Myers and Husted sheared top vases. The Tangerine vase on the left is Joel Myers designed Blenko #6923 with an earlier design of Wayne Husted, a Blenko #6317. The Myers design only has the dimples on two sides as opposed to an earlier design by Husted that all four sides have the pattern. The Husted vase is Jonquil and has a rose image on one side of the vase.

Two nice examples of Blenko vases where the tops have been cut off and ground.

Blenko Glass Company. Faded Jade Vase and Bowl

HI Doc,
Sometimes even a mistake can take on it's own beauty. All three of these pieces are in Blenko Jade or were supposed to be as is the case of the two vases on the right. Both of these were supposed to be solid Jade but the gathering and blowing process produced these fade patterns where the turquoise covering the jonquil base color was too thin to achieve an even jade coloring. As with most Jade pieces and as illustrated in the bowl if you are wondering if a piece is Jade or another Blenko green, just look at the edges as you hold the piece up to strong light. If you see the turquoise "edges" you are holding an example of Jade.The three examples here are, from the left, a Blenko #3744, a Blenko #5824, and a Blenko # 533.

I refer to these as the "Big Brother" and "Little Brother". These are Husted designed optic vases in Tangerine. The smaller is a Blenko #601 and the larger is a Blenko #602.

Steve and Margie Bair were very active in the Blenko Glass Collectors Society.  They have the most remarkable collection of HUSTED signed glass,  they have a large collection of WVa Birthday Vases,

BLENKO GLASS COMPANY> Festival of Glass Aug 5 -6 in Milton

The 9th Annual Festival of Glass event will be held at the Blenko Glass factory on Friday, August 5 & Saturday, August 6. 

During this event, visitors will have the rare opportunity to view our skilled artisans at work as well as be able to participate in a variety of classes related to the glass making process (fees apply & sign-ups required. Call us  (304) 743-9081 or (877) 425-3656 with questions and to sign up).
