Title

Heart of Glass - Blenko Glass

Blenko Glass is a West Virginia treasure that spans generations. Nothing symbolizes the state of West Virginia better or more beautifully than Blenko Glass. We will discuss current and former craftsmen and designers and how important it is that Blenko and West Virginia glass be appreciated and valued by the younger generation.

Don Shepherd for Blenko

Hi Hillary,
Just wanted to drop a few more photos in your in-box for the blog. You are familiar with my penchant for the earlier designer pieces but these are a few from Don Shepherds tenure as designer for Blenko ( 1974-1988) that I particularly like. The trouble is I stumbled onto some black poster board and now I cannot decide which background I like better for these designs in crystal. Would love to hear some feedback from your readers. From left to right you have a 7825 decanter ( 12"), 7823 vase (11"), 7824 jug (9 1/2") from the Cumulus line. I do have another specialty line from Don in crystal that I am waiting to shoot later this summer.

Enjoy,
Bruce

Hi Hillary and All,

I wanted to give you an update on our store "Kissin Kates", formerly of Hurricane WV. We have moved to the South Charleston Antique Mall on D street in South Charleston ( www.southcharlestonantiquemall.com) for directions.
It is a three story mall and we are #31 on the second floor. It would be well worth any glass collectors time to visit the malls on D street when you are in town. We usually have 100 - 200 pieces of glass in the store at any given time, and we are just one of 80 vendors.
Because I have limited space I can't put out many of my best pieces. If you would like to contact us directly, please email us at kissinkateswvglass@yahoo.com. Thank you, and I miss seeing you!

I like these, until this I thought crystal Blenko was boring.
???? is the old crystal lead?
Just wondering since blenko was hand blowing and most factories were using lead in good crystal.

Saul,

we don't have these birthday pieces but another vendor at the South Charleston Mall has the 80 and 81 birthday pieces. Use the email address in the post above to contact the mall.

Glassdoc
Do I see your name on a mural near the Blue Grass Kitchen in downtown Charleston?
Let me review this, you collect Blenko, you work as a dentist, and in your spare time you help paint murals?
Photos should have made the blog. I am sending to theblenkoproject@aol.com the I Phone photo I took of the mural.

I bought one of the Cumulus decanters a couple of years ago. It was a tad pricey for what I'm used to paying, but I figured I wasn't likely to run across one again. I will say though, it doesn't have the heavy solid feel of the older Blenko glass. So I rather doubt the Cumulus line uses lead crystal.

I found all three of these pieces
and paid less than $100 for each.
I have become a devotee of hunting for duplicates of your glass.
