Heart of Glass - Blenko Glass

Blenko Glass is a West Virginia treasure that spans generations. Nothing symbolizes the state of West Virginia better or more beautifully than Blenko Glass. We will discuss current and former craftsmen and designers and how important it is that Blenko and West Virginia glass be appreciated and valued by the younger generation.

Blenko FISH - Your Photos!

We WANT YOUR PHOTOS! BLENKO FISH, Lamps, ashtrays, or any one of a kind BLENKO? theblenkoproject@aol.com

Blenko Glass Fish are a value at $100 -175 in most shops and on EBAY.

We've shown photos from many people, one is a one of a kind fish made for a collector, another was made by Harry Thompson long ago - can you identify these fish?
Do you have others? Please share.

Ever wonder why FISH? Blenko makes beautiful fish, I thought perhaps the designers were inspired by the lake that surrounds Blenko.

Webmaster Steve sent the info below from the net - and his take is FISH are symbolic of good for most people.
Fish are aquatic vertebrate animals that are typically ectothermic (previously cold-blooded), covered with scales, and equipped with two sets of paired fins and several unpaired fins. Fish are abundant in the sea and in fresh water, with species being known from mountain streams (e.g., char and gudgeon) as well as in the deepest depths of the ocean (e.g., gulpers and anglerfish).
Fish are of tremendous importance as food for people around the world, either collected from the wild (see fishing) or farmed in much the same way as cattle or chickens (see aquaculture). Fish are also exploited for recreation, through angling and fishkeeping, and are commonly exhibited in public aquaria.
Fish have an important role in many cultures through the ages, ranging as widely as deities and religious symbols to subjects of books and popular movies in various cultures.

Dagon is known as the fish god, I think?
Dagon was a major northwest
Semitic god, reportedly of grain and agriculture. He was worshipped by the early Amorites and by the inhabitants of the cities of Ebla and Ugarit (which was an ancient city near the Mediterranean containing a large variety of ancient writings and pagan shrines). He was also a major member, or perhaps head, of the pantheon of the Biblical Philistines.
His name appears in
Hebrew as דגון (in modern transcription Dagon, Tiberian Hebrew Dāḡôn), in Ugaritic as dgn (probably vocalized as Dagnu), and in Akkadian as Dagana, Daguna usually rendered in English translations as Dagan.

Blog friend A. sent this info about FISH:
Inca myth - Fish God
Tritons of Inca origin, these fish gods swim in an underwater realm to protect the life that inhabits it. The gods possess both human and fish anatomical trait.

The red, white, and clear fish would look lovely any time of the year; however, my friend WV Lana, could use one when she decorates for July 4th!!!!

Thank you for pulling these photos together, Hillary. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts!!!

The more-transparent fish look beautiful with glass marbles in their belly.

Went to Blenko yesterday with Hillary's MOM, we had a good time and I got my Christmas present early.I must of been good this year. For I now feel spoiled. Take one off of my wish list. I will wait until we can get a picture to show everyone my NEW piece of Blenko. Would use the new phone that has a camera but it might not take a good picture and we know what that would cause. Looked at everything and the person who is looking for Water Bottles needs to call the gift shop and ask for Mindy or Diane. They have a table full to the right after you come thur the doors, and after the doors to the lake. They have alot of clear water bottles and three blues and gold and just one or two reds and green. There is a large table in the back with a hugh 50% off of a group of nice items even have pumkins for next year. The shop always smells warm and inviting. Oh! almost forgot the flower bed has one of those clear fish if you need to have a closer look before buying. I also saw several inside.I looked at several things and a little pink and frosted snowman caught my eye. Like the frosted look of the snowman with a pink hat. Just enough to make you think of winter days gone by. They also have these stands that you can hang stuff on, real nice item, should you want to show off your latest Blenko Christmas oranment. They also have afew that are like little trees. Still looking at those Hummingbirds, only should buy Blenko, and go to where they make the birds. Had one that was gold in color that I thought was the best one. Could be next at number one on my wish list. Almost broke down and brought myself something. Only got that trip coming up and Rog has not took me shopping for Christmas. By the time you get done reading this those exams you took this week will be less improtant because you will be laughing at my Job of keeping you informed of what they have at Blenko. The cutest little pocketbooks with, a little pet. Just the cutest. I cannot beleive that Cashmere still has her Christmas BOW in her hair. She has come along way.I to forgot that your Mom took me to a nice place called Touch of Class or Glass where you can get your blenko Personalized by two very friendly lady's who have a big fluffy cat that comes out of hiding to get you to say hello. Well I have already talked to much. Just thought I would let everyone know what I saw at Blenko. I also so saw some martini glasses with short stems that were in purple that looked interesting might you like collecting glasses. Real nice had a pearl kind of seashell look to them. The PINK was a table full and all I could see there was of course that snowman. Good Job to who ever made it. That frosted color would be beautiful I think all by itself or with color added. There I go again, in a frilly vase trimmed in pink or color of choice, big enough to hold a rose. Your Mom will get a kick out of this. She did the taking care of business and I did the looking. Have a good weekend, and just relax the weather is terrible. A good book and some hot chocolate kind of day. Love ya Roxie

Hillary; I just resent a group of photos of fish, lamps and one of a kind BLENKO pieces. If you still have problems receiving these photos, I can place them on my website for all to enjoy, and an easy way for you to copy them without AOL size restrictions. Thanks for all of your good work. Have a great holiday season. Larry from TX

Regarding your comment:

"maroon and blue are my favorite colors this one was never at blenko i'm sure it isn't a blenko fish."

I bought this fish at the visitors' center on June 20, 2008, on WV Day. It is signed by Richard Blenko and is shaped just like his green mate, also purchased that day. The maroon is actually red. The thickness makes it photograph darker. The blue looks like ocean blue with flecks of color mixed in. It looks like they were using end of day scraps on this fish.

Since I love lots of color, I grabbed this fish and couldn't let it go!

Hillary, nice fish. I can only think of one person that first name might be Harold that Harry worked with. I am not sure but i think Mac McComas first name was Harold, if i am right the photo in the 57 cataloge of Harry and Mac putting on a foot is him. The blue and gray Dalle of Pat White, Milton collors, reminded me of Tom Howard who graduated in 68 . he was a quiet and intelagent man with a lot of potentual. He was on theMarshal team that was on the plane that crashed. Tell me where to buy ornaments?
Blenko has none you falsely advertised Hilary.
I bought at Tamarack in Sept but want to add a couple dozen more
to have an all WV tree this year.
Suggestions? Everyone please tell me where you purchase WV ornaments.
Elizabeth

Heart of Glass said...

Elizabeth we recently bought 75 ornaments all different from Osburn Modern Glass located in Milton. Dave Osburn worked at Blenko for over 25 years, then bought Charlie Gibson's shop.
I don't have the website - anyone with the address or phone number?
Please share with Elizabeth.
Hinkle also does beautiful ornaments I got 25 of those this year.
Again, I don't have the address or phone number.
West Virginia made ornaments are available.
Check out Blenko or phone 304 743 9081 and tell them what you want.

I have also experience trouble trying to comment, or send photos.
Someone at blenko or the newspaper should give this kid a laptop.
WV Janis
You have the 'eye' I would have walked past the fish, artist just know beauty when they see. I wait for someone to find, then rush in to buy.
Dr Apgar & staff
My group and I started to buy blenko after discovering the blog, if you don't buy now I can attest the prices just go up.
Dr Bob
It would appear Hillary doesn't want you or Sol or us to know of her future plans. Laugh.
Rixe
We want to also go to blenko with Hillary and her Mom and you. We should all plan to meet at Blenko.
I'd like to know &see my fellow commentors.
Andre
Remember reading Hillarys comments about your artistic designs, having fish approved by you must be a Blenko 1st.
Milton Harld
My friends and I new collectors like learning about the workers, comment more often, please.

Beth Crittendan,RE: your desire for photos of items currently available in the Visitors Center.
I'm in Dental School 4 hours from Milton, thus I can't weekly take photos, I have requested Blenko send photos of available items, or items they wish to promote.
Christy has been very helpful in providing photos.
Otherwise we have no photos taken by Blenko (other than those on website) for blog publication.
If we receive photos of fish or other objects, they will be published.
We rely on the generosity of Blenko Collectors and Bloggers for photos. If you have photos please send to theblenkoproject@aol.com.
Thank you for buying Blenko and for reading the Heart of Glass Blog.
