Blenko starts on W.Va. Day piece

Blenko Glass Co. has started making its 2012 West Virginia Day piece, which will go on sale later this month in celebration of West Virginia's 149th birthday. It was designed once again by Arlon Bayliss, a professor of art and director of Glass Studies at Anderson University in Anderson, Ind. He's done six pieces since 2007. "This year's birthday piece celebrates the drama of West Virginia valley landscapes," said Bayliss, who said he was moved by the "power and beauty of Mountain State scenery" and designed a swirling vase form in turquoise, wrapped in zigzag yellow, brown and green lines. "A rippling rim undulates like mountain ridges, and spiraling lines twist and turn like riverbeds," he said. "Once again, Blenko's skilled craftsmen have excelled themselves, the design expresses the precious resource of their creativity, as well as that of the land that bore and nurtured them." 

The piece will go on sale at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 23, at Blenko. The glass company will sell 149 of the pieces for $149 each plus tax, in honor of the state's 149th birthday. They'll be sold first come, first served, one per person. They will be signed by Bayliss and Blenko President Walter Blenko Jr. Complimentary West Virginia birthday cake and refreshments will be provided.
