Heart of Glass - Blenko Glass

Blenko Glass is a West Virginia treasure that spans generations. Nothing symbolizes the state of West Virginia better or more beautifully than Blenko Glass. We will discuss current and former craftsmen and designers and how important it is that Blenko and West Virginia glass be appreciated and valued by the younger generation.

Specht Family of Texas Vases and Decanters

HEART OF GLASS BLOG Needs your photos and stories of BLENKO & WV GLASS, please send your photos to theblenkoproject@aol.com .

The Specht Family of Texas( see part of their collection at http://www.blenkoproject.org/ )collects Blenko as a family activity. They were kind to send the following photos and note the note has a description of the glass shown. If you haven't digitally photographed your Blenko consider doing it now. Tim Alonzo at the BCS last year suggested photographing each item, labeling the photo with date purchased, amount paid and all the info you have about the item. After you photo and label - send copy to us - or if you can't label - send copy someone maybe able to help. hjh

Hillary,
Hi Hillary,You had put out the call for photos last week and I finally found the time to respond. The first is of several different "finishes" using the same mold. It is fascinating to see how the various designers adapted with color and casing to change a simple vase design. I am still trying to find out whom to attribute the second vase. It is similar to Shepherds but is not listed in the Pina Books. Maybe Tammy can confirm? The second photo was during one of my "blue " days. Enjoy and feel free to share.

Last year or the year before (someone correct me) during collectors gattering a reproduction of that decanter was sold with stopper in the VC. The skill remains with Blenko. Where are you shopping for Blenko?

Went to our local Winter Antique Show yesterday. Out of 220 dealers, only 6 pieces of Blenko to be seen. I purchased 2, no model numbers, haven't had time to identify them. A green pitcher, square sticker and a mid-sized tangerine vase. No photo transmittal capability, another thing to do. Better priced than usual, less than $40 each. Keep your eyes open, you never know what you might find.

One of the serious collectors might better answer this - but I think the high end Texas department stores sold Blenko. Perhaps Larry or someone else from Texas will have a better answer.

My only insight as to why there is so much BLENKO in TX is that there has been a showroom at the World Trade Center here for many years. Thus making BLENKO product readily available to the local retail trade. Could be several other factors such as Blenko was at one time carried by Neiman Marcus (a local store)and the amount of Texas oil money. Larry from TX
