A Look Back at Art Glass

Folks -  This article from New York Times was sent by blog reader Maggie:

A Look Back at Art Glass
New York Times

Most exhibitions taking place during the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York present the newest of the new, but “Big Color,” which opens at DDC on Friday, will offer a retrospective of architectural-scale glass designs created in the 1950s through the 1970s by resident artists at the Blenko Glass Company in West Virginia. Eight years in the making, the show is directed by Damon Crain, a 38-year-old former gallery owner and art consultant, who discovered art glass as a child in Ottawa and amassed a large collection of antique bottles by the age of 12. At DDC, he will show 120 pieces created by the Blenko designers Wayne Husted, Joel Philips Myers and John Nickerson. “Sometimes people aren’t sure how to live with the pieces,” he said, “but when they see them grouped together as a landscape, something clicks and it makes sense.” Prices range from $700 for a 22-inch cylindrical vase by Joel Myers to $5,500 for a 38-inch-tall decanter by Wayne Husted. DDC: 136 Madison Avenue (32nd Street), (212) 685-0800, cultureobject.com.

My questions is what did Damon pay for this glass?
Laugh.
Dare you to publish this HJH

Damon is a rip off-that is the truth

Anonymous said...

no one likes him

Anonymous said...

For sure everyone hates him! What a totally illegitimate failure. I mean if the New York Times and Modern Magazine are reporting on him that's pretty pathetic.
Can you believe he dares to make a profit on his business!?! How rude! But obviously no one is buying his stuff seeing as he's been at it since 1998.
Last I heard he was so desperate he had to sell a major collection to the Toledo Museum and the Smithsonian museum. Serves him right.
Good thing Hillary made a copy of his Archive website so we don't have to look at his.

I have enjoyed each and every item
purchased on ebay from Damon.

Anonymous (just before Penny) Your tongue-in-cheek comments are priceless, and a welcome change to the Damon bashing comments on this post. We should be celebrating that this large exibition of architectual scale vintage Blenko is taking place, and that Damon is able to do it.

WOW you guys are awful.
Obviously Glassdoc has no problem with Damon or else she wouldn't have posted this article.
Now about copying his website - I m guessing if anyone used anything that belonged to Damon
everyone involved would be hearing from Google
and be asked to remove the offending subject.
If anonymous has proof of this she/ he should immediately report.
Several times we were referred to his site by this blog in an effort to find glass or info.
We bet Damon and Hilary have no problem with one another . . . .the problem is only from the blog comments and daily these housewives decide on someone new to hate.
Damon sells glass, Hilery fixes teeth, You should consider getting a job!

CPK.collectoroffineart said...

Wonderful news that Smithsonian and Toledo
bought a collection from Damon, Hilery I'll phone and ask them for photos of the collections they purchased.
This would make an awesome post.

Several Milton area residents would be lacking income if
Damon were to close shop.

Support anyone who gets black ink for Blenko.

Checked the Blenko Archives
and you are correct
the similarity is both have blenko catalogs til 74, Blenko Project then continues with catalogs til 2010.

BTW excellent job with the catalogs.

CPK - do attempt to get the photos, these housewives don't travel often.

Hello,
We DID NOT copy blenko archives. The catalogs posted on blenko project website are those sent to us by our readers, blenko glass company and museum of american glass.

OH V
don't respond to these morons

trust me if you copies one back

from Damon C. he would personally

write to ask for the word back.

My neighbor and several long time

collectors sell to him, frequently

they can be seen in Milton on June 20th event.

Long live everyone who wants to

promote Blenko and if they make a

while promoting Blenko and their

Bachelor's degree and unlimited experience.

Good for them. It all helps the

economy.

How long have you been in the USA?
This entire line of comments is off base.
Glssdoc in 2004 gave me the link to Blenko Museum which at this time sold glass. I doubt their is a feud between DC and Glassdoc.

Good News is
Blenko sellers from WVa and NC
now have glass in both of these museums. Damon is a curator of glass - meaning he buys your glass and then sells to other curators and impressionable people with $$ to spend.
Making money is never a bad thing.
Its a food chain, we all make a bit of money.
