Heart of Glass - Blenko Glass

Blenko Glass is a West Virginia treasure that spans generations. Nothing symbolizes the state of West Virginia better or more beautifully than Blenko Glass. We will discuss current and former craftsmen and designers and how important it is that Blenko and West Virginia glass be appreciated and valued by the younger generation.

Quotes - What''s With The Quotes?

Reader writes:

Hilary - You use a lot of one or two line quotes I've a question, where do these come from? What are your top 12 favorite quotes? Paul J.

Paul

You are asking 2 questions!

I suppose you could say I informally 'collect' quotes, friends and sometimes blog readers will send quotes. My favorite ones at this time come from monty python or other plays-film. I also favor virginia wolfe , anais nin and TS Eliot .

My relationship to quotes is so complicated 'a Gordian knot looks like a childs puzzle in comparison.'

Favorite quotes: This changes often - but for now the quotes on my desk are: 1)'Tomorrow is the most important thing in LIFE. Comes into us at midnight very clean. It's perfect when it arrives and puts itself in our hands. I hope we've learned something from yesterday.' JOHN WAYNE
  1. 'I know the price of success - dedication, hard work and an unrelenting devotion to the things you want to see happen.' Frank Lloyd Wright

  2. ' Man is the most extraordinary computer of all' John F. Kennedy

  3. 'Like all travelers I have seen more than I remember and remember more than I have seen.' Ben Franklin

  4. * 'A Woman's place is in the House and the Senate and the Oval Office.' anonymous

  5. *' We had a lot in common, I loved him and he loved him.' Shelly Winters.

* quotes I had on my Frig for a long long time , and they always make me smile.

Photo: This one I took last May - Two of the World's Best People. First Lady Gayle Manchin and Mr. Bill (WH jr) Blenko.

In selling glass, Damon Crane of "Vintage Modern Glasshouse" and the "BLENKO Museum" indicates whether or not the piece has been signed. Perhaps you can call on his expertise. He gets thousands for some of the BLENKO pieces. Does he charge more if they are signed?

One thing the signature does is verify authenticity. I have a couple of the fish (signed). Were they not signed, I might have trouble convincing someone that they weren't from Pier 1. However, I'm not planning on selling anytime soon!

I also like to have my glass signed, my favorite pieces are signed by Blenko workers : Les Womack, Shorty Finley, Jarfly, I'd love to have a Charlie Chapman, Harry Thompson, etc..and if I find them I'll buy them.
Dave Osburn , Randy Rider, Charlie are all younger Blenko people who have signed my glass.
Like you I don't plan to sell, and I hope my future children will value the glass as a part of our heritage.
Signature personalizes the glass - connects you with the item, makes more of a memory.
I also like to date my glass with the photo so I remember when it was given to me, or I purchased.

Your depth is surprising, never ever expected to agree with you in this lifetime, but I second your comment.
Thank you Hilary for your devotion, for the education, and humor you bring to my life and coffee chat at work.

I LIKE MY GLASS SIGNED, MY MEN TALL AND RESPECTFUL, MY CHILDREN TO BE CURIOUS AND MY MINISTER TO BE TRUTHFUL. PEOPLE ARE DIFFERENT WHAT EVER FLOATS YOUR BOAT. DO THAT.
BLENKO SEEMS TO BE ON A MISSION TO SELF DESTRUCT.
SAD TO SEE THIS HAPPEN, SOME SAY THE PRICES WILL THEN INCREASE, I WOULDN'T SELL THE ITEMS I OWN FOR 200% MARK UP. I ONLY BRING HOME WHAT I WANT TO LIVE WITH, WHAT I NEED TO SURVIVE AND FOR ME THIS INCLUDES COLORFUL GLASSWARE AND BLENKO SURE MAKES COLORFUL GLASSWARES. I'M HOOKED. IF I LIVED CLOSER I'D BE AT THE FACTORY BUYING THIS MORNING. THE ON-LINE SHOP ISN'T SO NICE.

I just love your comments. You sound so wise. I am in Northern WV (Morgantown area) several times a year. It would be fun to meet up and talk BLENKO and to go to a couple of the glass museums. You don't have to reveal your "whereabouts" online. However, perhaps through Hillary's e-mail, we could plan a BLENKO-chat (in person). Let me know what you think! We need more BLENKO clubs all over the US!

My favorite person to quote is Helen Keller. Even being without sight or sound, she was profound!
